Can't wait to hear what Continental recommends for a converter. That should be an interesting conversation...you've got a 571 Pontiac?

Sweet build. Same shortblock as in my 65. Gotta love the torque of the 4.75 arm.

That 571 would be an ideal candidate for a 3.25 or even a bit taller gear.
Mountains of torque.

I was thinking of a 3.50, I like the 3.25 idea, don't know how it would act on the low end.

You probably wouldn't see any difference in track performance between a 3.50 and a 3.25 gear.
Much more enjoyable on long drives with a taller gear, that 571 would easily tug a 2.75 and still tear your head off.

You could put that in the Ohio river & pull barges around with it!
Are we going to see it at Krogers in Milford again before you leave ? John |

Dang. That's a big motor!
I bet you could put 3.08s out back and it would be plenty fast and an absolute blast to drive on the freeway.

Here's thread featuring a car that surely weighs in very close to the '69 GTO that is the subject of this thread, running solid 11.40s (best run 11.3893 at 120.63 MPH with a 1.6802 60ft) with 109 less cubes and about 150 less HP using a 3.08 gear: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...highlight=3.08 I wouldn't hesitate to run a gear somewhere between 3.00 and 3.25 (Ford 9"), leaning towards the taller gears. No need to spin that big 4.75" stroke excessively while enjoying a long drive, I'd be willing to give up a tenth or two at the track to enjoy a lot of cruising into the sunset during my retirement.

Nice build...for a mostly street cruise car I would be inclined to have continental build a tight enough converter to let the engine idle then couple up quick after idle..
My reasoning is even at 1500 RPM that engine is probably out torqueing most engines at their peak and it wont stay at 1500 RPM very long with that torque. 2.50`s or 2.70`s gear out back, gears multiply torque, how much do ya need at the tires.. These two things would make it seem like a mellow stock car at part throttle and putting around will make the engine last longer and then when the hammer is dropped I would be willing to bet not much would be lost from a 3000 stall and 3.20 gear Probably hook a lot more street racers telling them you have a 2.50 gear and stock converter If that's your thing .

Yeah, I agree I lean toward the 3.25 right now with a tight conv. (better gas mileage too) lol. It came with a 3.23 when it was new.
