Peter,
I ground that lug on the calipers because when I first installed them they were hitting the brackets. Your right, there was no way the bolts were going to line up in the brackets without doing so. I also had to grind the casting around where the brake hose end fits onto the caliper. The casting was setup for a hose that had rounded ends on it whereas my hoses had squared ends, so I had to relieve this area slightly. I checked to make sure that I had adequate clearance and that I didn't have any interference between the caliper and bracket after grinding and I was good to go. The bolts went in easily when I all I had was the empty caliper sliding over the rotor and bolting it up that way. I really had to work with the bolts to get them started after putting the pads in the calipers. I noticed the brake pads were thicker than most I've seen for some reason.(I've seen a bunch of them, used to work in engineering for a facility that made them a few years ago) I wonder if this could be the cause of it?

i had all your same issues, except for too thick pads, i lengthened my push rod also, put a stainless flex hose on the back from frame to diff, with my 11 inch drums in the back, my brake pedal is still rock hard and super firm and i got a 1000 miles on it since finishing the car. i bleed mine from furthest away then work inwards from there, keep pluggin away. We have seen this "too thick" pad show a few too many times. Another issue are aftermarket drum hubs, they may have the wrong offset.

Do you have a particular brand that you would recommend I try? I didn't give but 10 bucks for these from auto zone. I believe my drums were the originals to the car. They had the swedges on the studs.

Hard to say - I have not seen any hubs for sale.

I use NAPA stuff then.

what brake hoses are you using? are you adding a tab to the frame at the hose/steel line junction? is there a special Hose to steel line adapter?
thanks getting ready to "buy" the kit and plates! |

I followed his instructions and had no problems whatsoever. I sent in the hubs to have the OD taken down a bit and install different wheel studs. The only thing that I encountered was that I had to trim the shoe holding tab a tad on the S10 calipers, when I installed American Mags.

I guess I've been looking at too many posts on the conversion. seems that the caliper and rotor choices have been evolving? scarebird: is that true?
What is the right combination of parts for the most updated conversion?? rotor? caliper? hoses? master cyl? Also: I haven't looked yet (my car is still in shipping)., but on the 61 tempest, does the master cylinder and pedal assy come out of the car in 1 pieces? from under the dash? thanks |

No, pretty much the same stuff for the last 6-7 years. We tried an experimental setup a few years back with Pete Serio but did not clear the frame.

this like says Celebrity Rotor, fairmont MC, firebird calipers: https://scarebird.com/index.php?rout...&product_id=76
S10 calipers are mentioned on this thread. that's why I asked. an ebay ad that you have specifies 85-90 Park Ave rotors. Is the links / parts correct? I'm going to buy the plates for sure. But I want to get all the right parts before I start! I'd also need to hose part number and adapter. Is that in the reg. directions that come with the kit? thanks (sorry about hijacking the thread) Last edited by bbscamp; 12-14-2013 at 02:48 PM. |

So i am bringing this thread back from the dead. I am working on this car again for the first time in years. I had the engine rebuilt, installed a holley sniper EFI and the car is running great.
I'm going through the brakes again since this thing has sat for almost 10 years. I have no idea where the install instructions parts list went for my scarebird kit and after bleeding the brakes several times I'm not having any luck with getting a pedal so I wanted to replace the master cylinder and calipers and rebuild the wheel cylinders so that everything is up to par. Do any of you have a make/model parts list for the master and calipers? I understand that scarebird has revised the brackets since mine were made and use different parts. The brackets I have work with the original drum hubs. Thanks.

How well is the Holley Sniper working?
Did you end up running a gas return line and in tank fuel pump? Thanks, Kyle |

Kyle,
I've only run the car in my shop so far breaking in the engine. I've got to go through the brakes first before driving it again. It runs really well so far. I've got to drop the tank and redo the return. At first I tied into the vent tube on the top of the tank but it pressurizes the fuel tank too much. The fuel has to be returned to the bottom of the tank to prevent this. That is my next project. I plan to plumb the return through the sending unit if possible so that I don't have to drill into the tank. I bought the kit that came with the external fuel pump. I fabricated a plate and mounted it to the gas tank straps to retain the pump and filters. I used the rubber fuel line provided in the kit to feed the engine and plumbed it on the passenger side of the car since it is 3/8" size and used the original 5/16" fuel line on the car as the return. I also converted the car to an internally regulated alternator to support the additional power requirements of the EFI system. I was able to buy some alternator brackets for a 63 off of a forum member here years ago. I also added a volt meter in the car to be able to monitor the charging of the system.

Scarebird 10 year Brake Info
I think this is what you are looking for? Used the Ford Fairmont MC but added a wedge at firewall to make it horizontal.

I couldn’t bleed the brakes with my wife either. She Kept pumping the clutch pedal the whole time after two hours I gave up. open the door so she can get out of the car and realize her foot was on the clutch.

What master cylinder part number did you use? I bought the NM1764 and it doesn't fit. The mounting holes are to close together 3.25. They should be 3.5".

The Fairmont master will require the mount holes to be elongated.
