Still above zero so all is good here in GP Michigan.
Back in the early 70s we would have to plug in the oil pan warmer and the electric coolant heater engine warmer otherwise you could not get the engine to turn over. Tom V.

10 degrees in Arlington, TX this morning but without the wind we had last night. Cold isn't the issue, it's the wind chill that catches you by surprise if you don't get those outdoor spigots covered in time. I've got one that has a suspicious icicle hanging from the cover.

In CT we are getting a lot of wind but it’s warm right now .
My dock is a bout half underwater though which I’ve never seen as long as I’ve owned the house .the winds are from the south (usually north this time of year) and that really pushes the water back up the river .

It went from 47 to -7 in a fairly short amount of time. My vinyl sided house starting raising hell about 10pm. Popping and cracking type noises. Farm where my son lives - out of power. He's due here shortly with wife and both dogs. My brother, 3 miles away, still has power, furnace cant keep up, house is 57 degrees and dropping by the hour. I remember as a kid, the winters being pretty harsh, and the Blizzard was awful. The local road department had a international dump truck with a giant V plow. The roads around here looked like open top tunnels! They got rid of the plow after decades of non-use. The wisdom of that decision is still playing out in some fashion. And it will be almost 60 by next weekend. Mother Nature is off her meds.

We missed the really cold temps here. Only got down to 25 or so. I've been in -20 (not wind chill) when I lived in WI, that's cold. But, we do have a layer of ice over everything. Don't know what the roads are like but my driveway is not driveable. I don't have to work today, but if I did, I wouldn't be able to go until my driveway thawed out.

A lot of contrails around here this past week counted 30 in one day and we don’t see a lot of the sky from here w all the trees.
Many believe this is cloud seeding. Many don’t being a pilot o know a lot of guys who flew for the gov. All of them I’ve run into say absolutely programs based on manipulating the weather there are even pictures of the equipment floating around . We live around the corner from Mr. Anonymous.
Furnace is running pretty much continuous, but house is toasty warm. Well pump didn't freeze. Victory!! Power is still on. I installed an automatic backup generator a couple years ago and it's like a magic charm for keeping utility power on. The guy down the street works for the power company. He says "as long as I live on your street, the power won't ever be off for long". Looking forward for the wind to quit. Eric

The National Weather Service advised for no travel in southern MN and most of WI from 6PM Wednesday - 6AM Saturday.
We had planned to head down from the Rochester, MN area to Madison, WI on Friday morning. With the warnings, we were thinking we might have to wait for Saturday morning to go down. After blowing about 4 - 5" of fluffy snow yesterday morning in -10 below weather (air temp -30+ wind chill), I told my wife maybe we should head out. The wind was only in the teens and the roads were decent. Not trusting the weather service, we called our daughter to confirm that things were similar down there. They were, so we did. I-90 from Rochester to Wisconsin Dells were mostly bare pavement and the winds maintained in the mid teens and no snow. When we got off the interstate at the Dells, Hwy 12 is 4 lane for about 20 miles. The right lane was bare pavement, but the left lane was snow covered. Got to Madison and the roads to our daughters house were all compacted snow. Trip was made in pretty much normal time - despite the "no travel" advisory. For pretty much a nothing burger, schools in southern MN were closed both Thursday and Friday. In Madison, they were canceled W - F. As to comments about sweatshirt weather.... That's what I wore driving down (yes, I did have a jacket, gloves and a hat in the backseat of the car). We stopped to do a little shopping and to have lunch - and just went out with just the hoodie on. The forecast (if accurate) for our return trip is for temps in the low teens - that will be tshirt weather... |

With highs approaching 80* on Christmas Day here in San Diego, I'll be roasting Chestnuts down on the beach.
The storm thats in the NW now will be hitting us next week with rain and temps about 60* Say what you will about California politics, gas prices, etc. You can't beat the weather. It's why we call it "The Sun Tax'

When I was growing up in the 1970's midwest(ND,MT,WY). People weren't pussies like they are today. They didn't shut down schools and roads. I remember going out for recess at school when it was -22 with 30mph winds and it snowing sideways.. I remember riding around town and seeing snow drifts over houses. Though it never got down into the -40's. -30's was a common occurrence.

Just remember if you travel by car keep lots of food and water in the car and blankets with you. Never count on the cars heat ti keep you warm . Especially if snowing because a tail

Just a few minutes ago I saw my rugged neighbor Phil who is a log truck driver try to make it down our road. We live on a hill with some switchbacks to get up/down it. He turned back before he got to the steep part. Road is covered in a layer of ice.
