As far as the junkyard goes, just take the pitman arm with you! (Leave it on the box)

thanks for the advice guys, this certainly sounds doable provided i get my hands on the right tools. what years of the S-10 should i be looking to get a box out of (can it be a blazer or a truck, or just a truck)? do i need a pitman arm puller and an impact to get the box out of a truck at the junkyard? i might go hunting this saturday...

yeah just take a hammer and a balljoint fork. I believe you will also need a 10mm wrench to take off the bolt to the spline. look for 1982-93 s-10 s-15 truck or the blazers/jimmys. the manual is more common on the trucks or as I have seen. I'm not sure if the 90-93 had manual but I think they do and they will be tighter boxes more offten.
