Practice!

The first few always get scratched, but after you do a few thousand you get pretty good!

Anybody remember these?

Back in the day, when you would come back to your office, there would be a whole stack of these waiting, because your secretary (...remember when we had secretaries?...) would have placed them on your desk.

That was back when human beings answered the phone...

Along those same lines, the Engineering releases used to be done on paper as well.

The document, like the one shown below, would be drafted up (in pencil) and placed in one of those clear plastic document covers.

It would be given to the Specification writers to do their magic (...in "Spec-eze", the secret shorthand that is used; they don't really speak English) and once they approved it would be typed up (on a typewriter - before "word processors").

Then the document, known as an "ECA" (Engineering Change Authorization) would physically be carried from one department to the next for the appropriate sign offs. I actually caught my Chief Engineer in the McDonalds parking lot (...having a smoke...) one time and asked him to sign one of these.

Once all the signatures are in place the Specification writers actually perform the work as described and the information is shipped to the assembly plant in summary form (an "ECS", or Engineering Change Summary, which is the specific type of document shown below).

Naturally, today this is all done on computers. The virtual document still makes the rounds, only via computer signoffs, and the systems are linked together so that the information flows directly to the assembly plants electronically.

Don't ask me how...

Default Spelling is a lossed art

What did we used to know that we no longer know. What trades do not have enough value that GM can no longer spend 76/hour training an apprentice to do it?

What can the Chinese and Indians do that we cant?

In keeping with the "how we do it now" theme I submit the attached. Since this is out in public, I suppose it's ok to link it here.

The PPO shop mentioned in the attached article is one of the buildings I work in and across the street from my office in the Tech Center. Andrew Farah, Vehicle Chief Engineer, is my boss's boss.

Incidently, we shipped the first Volt "Integration" (aka IVER) vehicle yesterday, one day ahead of schedule.

Faces of GM: UAW at GM Design

I thought I would post this here, since it is some really good footage of the hourly guys and gals at the GM Design Studios that actually put together those "one off" show vehicles that you see at the auto shows and in print.

Some neat insights into how showcars are made:

Hmm. Bummer - I'll see if I can find it in a different location and repost.

Well dang - that's a serious disappointment. It's gone from YouTube and from the internal GM locations. Very strange, as I know they rotate the videos but usually they stay on there for a while.

I hate for you all to miss it, so if I ever see it again (or one like it) I'll link it up.
