Sometimes those check valves just rust shut.

They should be checked periodically.

So,do I win a prize?A quart of used oil perhaps?

Great advice, and come to think of it, that was the side the head gasket let go, hhhmmmm? Between that and the backfire had to be the cause of it locking up the way it did, I think I'll just replace both of them just on G.P.! (always better to be safe than sorry)

How's the oil pressure deal ????
When Pontiac went to the 1258 in '67 with the 400 engine it was smaller than previous years (60-66) using the 1049..NAPA filters..BUT the earlier 1049 filters had no by-pass valve nor anti-drain back valve.. The 1258 does have a anti-drain back but NO bypass....relys solely on filter housing BP valve...I don't know about swaping filters to get the larger 1049 without the ADB valve ??? Pontiac engineers were pretty smart..
The 1258 was also used on AMC but they mounted them horizontal and oil would drain out without ADB valve. Pontiac (stock) mounts almost vertical !!?? I did run the 1049's (with 60 filter housing) on my car for the larger capicity, didn't notice any problems. My starter is seperate from ignition so I spin it over before firing...

As stated earlier, I replaced the filter after removing and cutting the previous one and seeing the beginning stages of a collapse! Now that coupled with the stuck E-vac on the passenger side header I hope I've gotten to the bottom of this problem, but I won't know for sure until I make a pass. (thanks for inquiring)
