I replaced the rear seal in my 70 TA with the engine in the car. It's not that big a job if you have a lift.

It's best to pull it out and smoke test it completely.
These oil pressure leaks are tricky, and messy. Car runs great, sounds great, drives smooth. Just, want to keep it doing that when running its born with parts. If all checks out new gaskets, and a good clean up for paint.

Pulling off inspection plate reveal no oil on flywheel...valley pan leak doesn't translate to oil they dipstick. Compression test show all cylinders equal with 150 psi.
Leak down test to see if it's a ring thing... This will be interesting as Pontiacs engines have weird symptoms...

Leak down test shows 3 bad cylinders...
DID A LEAK DOWN TEST RESULTS: 1-26% 3-24% 5-60% 7-60% 2-18% 4-55% 6-30% 8-22%

Agreed. A good engine should show less than 5-10% leakdown. Those numbers ain't good!

Mike, With everything you have going car-wise, an engine rebuild is the last thing you need right now. I will help you out pal! I will still take her off of your hands knowing the motor needs to be rebuilt!
These old cars ALL need something. |

Who's little gem is this?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Fire...m=252396816389 Judge273, There is something better than having the car that you have. It's having a matching set of them! |

From the text of the ebay ad: "I see a lot of false adds on the internet with photos of this rare vehicle."
He's right. When you google search any of the inages you get dozens of for sale ads with the same photos. So how do we know this one is real? Someone go buy it (for me). |

The funny part is it sounds and runs so good.
Got to get her engine rebuilt for Dayton. Reliable guts are critical. I saw that car in Elgin a few years ago, and they are not twins. Thanks for the offer Jeff! Shout to Bob and Lloyd who know the results aren't pretty or happy...

The other car is one that I saw the guy rip the exhaust off on a manhole cover leaving the Uprising a couple of years ago. Yes this car is real and if I remember real nice

If you need a camshaft, I have the Melling SPC7 (reproduction of the 455HO cam) and matching lifters that I took out of the Gramma's car's 350 when we did up the 455 to replace the 350. It has less than 1000 miles on it. All the lifters are marked with tape as well as the box, as to exactly what lobe they came from. I went with something more radical in the 455.

Thanks Steve, Just starting to digest the process. I put a more radical cam in my GT-37 and TA. Maybe this is a chance to do it again?
Like to hear some thoughts on the rebuild ideas... Rods, pistons, bearings, rings...time to redo valves?

Mike maybe you should consider the Duplicolor rebuild. Then it would sound good run good and look good. |

Dennis,
This engine was rebuilt prior. Not sure when? Probably the 90s I'm guessing, and the owner at that time had car painted. I remember him telling me it was rebuilt by a Chevy guy. I'm sure the ring failure happened under my watch as I've driven it harder than most I'll bet. This rebuild will be for better stock reliability and long road trips.

Good plan Mike, it's a 455 HO that you love to drive. Drivability and overall performance are much more important than getting 3 tenths of of the et. Even with a nice stock style build the thing is still goona have major amounts of torque

Your engine was rebuilt by a guy named Craig, who owned the car prior to the guy who you purchased it from. (I bought my 70 Formula 400 from Craig also). Craig was a heavy duty GM mechanic for many years. I know he worked for Chevrolet at one point, but he's a "Pontiac guy" not a Chevy guy. If you want me to put you in contact with him just PM me your contact info and I will pass it along.
