I dropped my glove box door last week and a large piece broke off. I've been hunting for a nice OEM replacement, but I haven't had any luck. How are the reproductions? I see one that's complete with the steel backing, and the other is just the plastic outer. Not really concerned about correctness, but I needs to fit well.

IIRC the '70 Doors have a different metal configuration where the sticker goes than very late '70 and on up do, if it matters to you on this build.
repops I have used fit pretty good . |

Did you use the repop of the complete door (plastic outer and metal inner) or only the plastic outer (which you’d rivet onto an existing metal inner)?

Use the whole door . Did Not have the typical top warped out problem ..

At some point, the holes for the RH mirror got welded up, and I can't find a template or anything on line or in the assembly manual. Should RH mirror be positioned in the same spot as the one on the driver's door? Wondering if someone can give me some measurements to be sure.

Jeff, I just checked a set of original 70 doors I have, and both RH and LH sport mirrors are in the same place on the door.

Since it was riveted in originally, I like to make a brace like the DS has, weld small nuts on it and weld it to the inside of the door by plug welding it.
Then you can use 3/16 bolts vs a rivit, or worse, harsh sheet metal screws. |

Had to decide on the color of the underlying primer sealer...surprising what a difference it makes...that's 4 coats of high quality base coat (PPG) carousel red on that card. Also very surprised by how much a gallon of paint costs these days.

Things are moving right along. Randy's spending some time cleaning things up, seam sealing, etc., on the floor bottom. I'm going for factory+ rather than glam-touring perfection, so maybe 2 days rather than 2 weeks.

My next projects involve modifications to accommodate the mini-tubs.
First, I need to add about 2" of width to the rear armrest panels. The plan is to rivet aluminum material in that space and cover and blend with U-Pol 706...if I can't get a nice finish with SEM texture coating I'll have it upholstered in the same material as the door panels. Second, I need to narrow the rear seat back by a couple inches on both sides, and then trim a couple inches from one corner of seat bottoms. I changed my seat order from Recaro Expert M to Specialist M. Not quite as comfortable as the Expert, but very close, and I think they'll look much more at home in the car. Less bulky, and very similar to those used in 3rd gen cars.

The key will be getting your pieces to be rigidly connected so as to avoid cracks in your top surface. In addition to rivets, you may want to spread some epoxy across a wider bonding surface to avoid the possibility of the connected parts hinging around the rivets. Once it's all good and stiff, fill and smooth the u-pol. Then I would spray the entire panel with a good primer filler with some flex additive in it. Sand it smooth, then apply the SEM texture coating so it's going over a uniform smooth surface. Then do the final coloring of the panel with whatever interior dye you are using. You can make it look great, but it's a lot of work....

Randy's been on the car for a little over a month now. He promised to have it done in 3, and is right on track. Sticking to my plan to maintain as many factory details as possible...won't paint the vin tag the same color as the dash top, for instance.
I've been trying to make progress on all the odds and ends. Going through boxes of parts and trying to clean and restore as much as possible. I actually forgot about a lot of stuff I picked up over the last few years. Received some carpet samples from Legendary and other vendors. Apparently, Legendary uses Saddle color carpet (#26) with '70 Sandalwood. I think the color looks too orangey, and a bit jarring next to the Sandalwood vinyl and paint samples. Light/medium saddle (#27) might work better. Dark Gold and Parchment actually seem to match best, but quite different from factory I suspect.

"Orangey" for carpet on a '70 Sandalwood interior is correct. But it does clash a bit with non-orangey exterior colors. And I'd be surprised if any of the repro carpet colors are actually the correct shade. Regardless, I would go with what looks best to you.

Looks like about half the car is painted.
