Tripower, thanks for the heads-up. On the PHS does it say when the car was built? I see it has GT-37 nameplates on the fenders. Must be an early car.

It has a February 15th build date, before the mid-March change over to the sword stripe. Still think the car is worth saving but he is not gonna let it go for cheap.

I'm going to do my own personal survey on the 1970.5-71.5 GT-37's.If anybody owns or knows a friend that owns one of these cars please list the year,the motor with either 4bar. or 2bar. and the trans on this thread.Plus the orginal color of the car if possible.If you can send pics and you have paper work ect. please do so if you want.Thanks

I dont know about 1/4 mile times, but when i had your gt-37 i did make 1 eighth mile pass with it to test the clocks at the dragstrip he runs. I launched super soft, and it still spun into 3rd gear even with some pedaling. ran i think in the ball park of 10 flat in the 1/8th, but had a really high 2-7 or 8 60ft time. most likely, with some good tires and a little traction, a high to mid 14 second pass... not bad for a bone stock 400 that hadnt been tuned up in about 5 or 6 years..

I did break the ring & pinion in it on the way to a 1/4 mile track if that counts for anything..

does anybody know of any of the ultra rare knafel magnum400 tempests still in existence??? THAT IS THE ULTIMATE PONTIAC CAR, at least during the post factory racing effort days 12.70's off the showroom floor..

Bill "Tin Indian" Knafel inducted into Summit County, Ohio Sports Hall of Fame from the Beacon Journal

Knafel’s Pontiacs were dominant force

Bill Knafel, a former Akron’s Pontiac dealer, likes to remind people of his domination in the world of auto racing. From 1959 to 1971, his 32 Pontiac Tin Indian racing cars won more than 200 national and world races without a loss.

Knafel’s team defeated teams sponsored by Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge and Ford among others.

What was his secret?

"Well", he said, "we had redesign and re-engineering shops at our Pontiac dealership and we reworked everything. I accepted more cars right out of Pontiac’s engineering department than anyone else. The cars would come off the assembly line and we’d pick them right up."

Executive John Delorean sent Knafel a 1963 Tempest for road tests, and he quickly made some alterations. "I nicknamed it Running Bear, took it to Alton, Illinois, and set a new national speed record. In fact, that’s how the 1964 GTO came about" Knafel said.

Knafel’s 1966 GTO won 27 championships in one year. Knafel’s racing team included drivers such as Larry Dixon and 1978 Summit Hall inductee Arnel Vanke.

Knafel’s sponsorship network not only included auto racing, but also area youth teams and leagues in baseball, softball and bowling.

Only GT-37 article I have is for a '71 called the white tornado by Joe Oldham. 14.14 or so at about 100. Low compression, 3:55 gears and 4 speed. Not sure if close or wide ratio. Will try to find and post article.

I've got an article from the June '71 issue of Hot Rod in which Steve Kelly tests a metallic blue '71 GT-37. The car is equipped with a 300 HP 400 CID engine, a wide ratio 4-speed, and a 3.55 rear axle. It turned a best 1/4 mile time of 14.40 @ 97.50 mph.

The white tornado car was featured in Speed and Supercar and it was equipped the same way. Joe Oldham got that '71 GT-37 to run a best of 14.32 @ 98.79 mph. That same car was tested in Cars Magazine where it ran a 14.50 @ 96 mph.

Both cars were said to be in bone stock condition and the times were very similar. Very impressive for stock low compression 400 '71 A-body cars. A little supertuning would improve those times quite a bit.

No roadtests were published of '70 400 4 spd Tempests or '70 1/2 400 4 spd GT-37's. Through the years working ton of big swappers went through examples of every issue of CarCraft, HotRod, Cars, Speed & Supercar, Car & Driver, etc, from that period. The Speed & Supercar mags were esp hard to find being eastcoast mags with limited distribution. For the 350 horse '70 models, I'd expect stock 1/4 mile times to be just a tad quicker than similiarly equiped 400 4spd 71 GT-37's.

That Cars Magazine test of the '72 GT is one of my favorite also. That duck tail spoiler really set that car off. We sure had a lot of great performance cars come out of Detroit back in those days, especially Pontiacs. Year after year, you could expect it. What ever happened?

Yep - chrome nose AND the infamous one of ??? ducktail spoilers! Very unique deal, sure would love to find out what became of that one. Prolly crushed by PMD once it was beaten to death by all those cave man magazine testers!
