Super work Paul, and again thanks for the photos, I have some electronic tubes I need to send your way for a Cryo bath, and I keep forgetting to do so.

Porting wise I have been doing a ton of work investigating the Exh side on a Ford 460 late model head with all the air injection stuff that chokes the 1.65" valve down a pitiful 130 cfm@28"!

I thought I had a real good handle on Exh side porting work after 20 plus years of doing it, but these heads kicked my Butt for a while until my best friend Mr velocity probe was put to use and the light came on!

If you have time to give a call I can pass on to you what I have learned and likely help you out with those 670 Exh ports even though they are far and away easyer than these Ford Exh ports!

I don't know what the Hell Ford was thinking on this CID motor, 270 cfm intake ports and 130 cfm Exh in stock form, a real beard puller !

Yeah, those 460 exhaust ports are horrible! I can't even get my pinky finger through the port, it is so choked off. Jeff[guy I work with] completely cut the exhaust ports off his 460 heads, then made an aluminum block he bolted on that had new exhaust ports that just went up and out. Now that exhaust port flows about 260 @ 28". That engine now, with a flat tappet cam, stock rods, stock crank, and cast pistons, makes 648 HP @ 6700, and 590 ft. lbs.!

Did you ever drive one of those 70's Ford barges with the 460? Holy crap they felt like a 4 cylinder was under the hood!

Yes, I drove I van once with that motor and heads like this and my first thought was that I have driven Ford 150 series pick up trucks with the straight 6 in it that would blow it away!

I have near 4 hours of combined porting and valve job time into this one development port and it is maxed out at 184 cfm, up from the stock 130.
This is with stuffing a 1.77" valve in the thing!
The flow increasing canting of the valves in these heads is totally off set by that poorly executed air injection boss !
I have the low lift and mid lift numbers up to quite high levels, but like you posted Paul, doing the old 70s pro stock mod of just cutting off and fitting in a block section my high life numbers are topped out.

Nice hp levels but those cast Pistons must be real close to going south!?

Those cast pistons are KB Hypers. I cryo treated them, the crank, and the rods. They have been in there for over 12 years now. Boat runs an 11 second 1/4 mile.

Default More head work

I angle milled my heads today. I mounted the head with .060" worth of feeler gauge under the feet of the setup fixture.

This is after the first .004" cut.

And after a few cuts.

Halfway there.

Notice how the row of head bolts, where the fresh cut is up to, are not in a line. The end head bolt holes are closer to the intake surface than the middle three.

Finally done. 25 passes at .004" per pass.

So now I have to fix the intake surface to get it back to 90° to the deck. I bolted the deck surface to a 90° angle plate, bolted to the table of the mill.

Then I used a touch off gauge to level the head.

First pass was .020" and cut half way up.

Last pass.

Done deal.

I left a step for the valley pan to seal on. It does not interfere with the intake gasket.

Second head angle milled.

Now to do the intake side of it.

Thanks!

That is a nice set of pics.

What do you think the angle amount is that was milled?
Less than 1º probably?

Here's my calculator for angle milling:

or to figure how much to cut for an angle:

I can measure the head I haven't corrected yet. It is more than 1°, I can tell you that. It took .050" to clean up the intake surface.

I know 1 degree is about .017/ inch. How wide was the face of the head?

About 3 1/4" if I had to guess.

Turns out it changed by exactly 1°. I would have thought it would have been 2 or so.

Well, it's been a while since I updated this. So here goes. I've been real busy at work at it's been wearing me out. Starting to get a little caught up so I thought I would get back on my stuff. I recently found for cheap[free actually] a 4 bolt main 400 block, but it was missing a #2 main cap. I found a main cap, so now I can get started with this one. I have a 4 bolt ARP main studs kit for it. The block is rusty, and needs to be shot peened, which I would do anyway. It is also .060" over, which is what my new pistons are. So, I will need to sleeve it. I will have some ductile iron sleeves made for it in a slightly under .060 oversize, that way I will have a thick of walls as possible. I spent the day yesterday getting it ready for the SS shot blaster. Then it will look like brand new. Here are some pics of it. It's a 1971 481988 block. Must have been sold over the counter as it has no numbers stamped in the front of it. I magnafluxed it, and it has no cracks.
