Ok, how did this happen?

They Multiplied!

The Barndoor is up for action now on fee-bay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221149921127...84.m1558.l2649

The bug catcher will be shortly after I clean it up.

The carb is plan "B" if the injection does not work out.

The Birdcatcher is currently plan "A"

I’m still playing catch up with the Car Nut's Updateds on the blower install this is from 10 27 2012.

I’m sure that I have forgotten something and put something out of order.

Ok, This is a small update compared to the last one as it is pretty much a duplication of the last one, except many parts were returned and different ones were ordered.

Below is a list of the new parts that were ordered

Ordered from Littlefield
Blower Snout 5.120
3/8 pulley spacer for crank pulley
Starter belt shield

Ordered from Good Vibrations Motorsports
3 Pack green gasket set for blower
Burst panel frame with 10/32 screws
3 pack burst panel
4.25 idler pulley with standoff and hardened washer Off set unknown (might be 1 inch, need 1 ¼).
4 X 5/8 / 18 bolt
t-nut

USA Supercharger
Belt, 190 tooth rubber with Kevlar fiber
Top plate for single dominator carb

ARP
2 ½ / 5/8 /18 crank bolt

We bolted the new parts on

Spaced the idler pulley and crank shaft pulley out temperately and cranked the engine over to see where the belt would run

This can be seen on a short u-tube video at this link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQV_4...ature=youtu.be

Settled on the BirdCatcher injector hat as plan “A”

So now we are ready for some machine work next week;

Clearance the spacer between the blower and intake for the forward outlet of the retro blower, machine the front so that the burst panel can be mounted, open up a path from the front to the rear of the intake in the spacer. Machine a spacer for the idler pulley, machine a spacer for the crank pulley.

Torment Quote: "They come with 3/8" I believe correct? So you upped it to 1/2" and no problems at the low boost you've been running?"
"I had one on my old BDS 8-71 and I ran it as much as 23%OD, but I had to put a pretty hard turn on it to get it would stay in place. I never modified from the as supplied set screw. I found the clocking position (less rotated up = better) was also a factor."

Torment,
It's not the boost..................it's the overdrive (spinning the blower more, I spin mine almost 30% over). Also it does not come with a set screw in it just a 3/8" bolt to tighten. I added a 1/2" set screw on top to help lock the pulley arm in place.

Ahh... Ok - I got it. The set screw was additive. Yes the one I owned... came with a 3/8" allen head bolt. I didn't connect your 1/2" set screw was additive. Good mod in a pinch it sounds like, if you don't want to invest in a competition piece.

Increase boost = increased hp to drive = increased stress on the drive system - including the tensioner. It's part of it. We can agree to disagree right? Not key to the OP's topic... but the set screw idea might help someone else out there!

Torment,
All I know is it works and I am making over 1300 HP and I would recommend this fix to anyone.

Thanks, George

I am combining the car nuts meetings of 11/3/2012 and 11/10/2012. I will finally be caught up.

I have updated my web site with this update. If you view it there it will make more sense as the pictures are many more pictures and the are mingled with the text at the proper points to make sense.

The link is below
http://www.leverfamilysite.com/2010_...2012_11_10.htm

There will be no car nuts meeting for 11/17/2012

I received yet another injector hat in the mail, this one is a bug catcher that came with a bunch of other parts which we will be able to use. Packing was not great, and the items were not in as good of condition as hoped. Fee-Bay is always a crap shoot

We had a number of contributors through these to gatherings. Between Ray and Steve we were able to come up with plan for the spacers needed for both the bottom pulley and the idler pulley. The bottom pulley was fairly interesting as a number of things had to happen.

The pulley had to be moved ½ inch out from the hub to get the belt to ride in the center of the pulley, by doing this we lost the register for the fuel pump drive, also with the new crank hub the stock retaining washer was to small in diameter to reach the outside diameter of the new crank hub. So Ray machined a new retaining washer that had the outside dimension of the crank hub, the washer was stepped so that it would fit inside the crank hub.

With the outside dimension the same as the hub and sitting proud of the hub this became the register for the fuel pump drive. It goes together like this.

The Idler pulley was a lot easier, all it required was a 5/16 spacer to get the belt into the correct position.

I have been told a number of times that my gold colored valve covers are not everyone’s favorite, I happen to think that they go nicely with the gold leaf stripping on the body of the dragster.

An informal vote was taken amongst the car nuts and it has been decided to go to a set of fabricated aluminum valve covers, what do you think?

Oil was added to the gear housing on the blower and the snout bolted into place.

The four inch spacer has been machined in three areas, material was removed from the front top of the spacer to acuminate the retro outlet of the blower (A retro blower has it’s outlet further forward than a standard blower which is supposed to increase the efficiency of the blower).

The front outside was machined to accept a burst panel frame. The current BDS manifold has a pop off valve at the rear which is not acceptable by either NHRA or IHRA. Lenny installed the panel.

The bottom of the center rib was machined out to allow for better flow inside the manifold from front to rear.

In the vein of reasoning that nothing can remain untouched the Birdcatcher injector hat will not remain untouched. The barrel valve that was on it will be switched to a “K” valve, by Jack and Lenny. (Please no e-mails about the alignment of the “K” valve to the shutter leveler on the injector hat).

The hoses that were on the birdcatcher have been removed and new hard lines installed. The oil filter lines have been “protected”.

So here is the finial fitment check.

The valve covers do not fit right and will have to be modified, I wish the belt was centered more on the upper pulley.

Plans are now moving forward to the mounting of the pump. The pump will be remote mounted and driven by a belt from the bottom pulley. This pump came with the stuff from Fee-Bay. It is a Hillborn 150A-0 pump which turns out to be way too small for this application. The remote mount however appears that it will work out with some modifications.

That’s it for a couple of weeks, other projects require my time.

Inaugural NHRA New England Hot Rod Reunion
September 12-14, 2013
Thursday through Saturday
New England
Dragway
Epping, NH
Tickets on sale 5-9-13

Proposed Racing Classes http://www.nhra.net/2012/images/Muse...ingClasses.pdf

The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum announced it will host the inaugural New England NHRA Hot Rod Reunion Sept. 12-14, 2013, at historic New England Dragway in Epping, N.H. The event is destined to be one of the largest gatherings of vintage drag racers and hot rodders in the northeastern region.

“With the storied New England Dragway and vibrant hot rodding culture in the northeast, the New England NHRA Hot Rod Reunion is a perfect fit," said Larry Fisher, executive director of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. "We’re looking forward to celebrating the role of hot rodding and nostalgia drag racing in the area and providing fans with a stellar reunion experience.”

The family-friendly reunion is a three-day festival of speed, hot rods, and American automotive enthusiasm. Race fans will enjoy rubbing elbows with many heroes of drag racing’s past and enjoy watching the heart-pounding nostalgia drag racing action on the track throughout the event. Fans will be able to cruise through the Show ’N Shine area featuring hundreds of beautiful hot rods, customs, and collectible cars. Saturday night’s grand-finale Cacklefest show promises to bring tears to your eyes as dozens of nitro-burning historic front-engine dragsters and other classic race cars are push-started and fired up on the dragstrip just as in the 1950s and 1960s. The roar of the engines and flame-throwing headers create an amazing symphony of “cackling” sights and sounds that only old iron motors can produce on nitro.

Legendary New England drag racer Jimmy King of Rhode Island has been named grand marshal of the inaugural event. King and the late Don Marshall made up one of the best NHRA Top Fuel drag racing teams in the East Coast during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, King continues to relive his glory days of drag racing as crew chief of the Helger Bros. Racing team, of Little Compton, R.I. King, along with the Helger Bros. team, is eager to head to his favorite track, New England Dragway, for the first New England NHRA Hot Rod Reunion.

The New England area has a long and storied drag racing history, with the sport making its debut at the old Newington Airport in 1953. New England Dragway was opened in September 1966 and became an NHRA member track in 2011.

“All of us at New England Dragway are thrilled about hosting the museum’s Hot Rod Reunion in 2013," said Joe Lombardo, New England Dragway general manager. "It is without a doubt the most prestigious nostalgia event in the country, and we’re honored to be chosen as the third location for this prestigious event. We are in the process of making some significant improvements to our facility. Our goal is to ensure everyone who takes part in this event comes away with a positive experience and eager to return.”

Ticket sales for the inaugural event begin May 9, 2013;at that time, log on to NHRAtix.com or call 800-884-NHRA (6472). Auto Club member discounts are available. Look for the AAA Northern New England affiliate at the event for membership info. Children under 15 are admitted free at the gate when accompanied by paying adult. For more information, log on to the museum website, NHRAMuseum.org.

So, without reading the whole thread, who made the intake manifold?? Brand?

Tom Vaught

ps I designed a similar lower pulley cog belt drive for Lee S RA-V Vortech Supercharger set-up. It worked ok but I like the pieces that you used.

It is a BDS intake with a 5 inch spacer on top of it to give clearance for the distributor and to allow me to put the burst panel in front and retain the water outlet on the intake manifold.

any relationship to Mark Vaught who runs the NDRL series?

Maybe if Mark Vaught came out of Texas. All of my father's family came from Texas roots. Lots of Vaughts in Texas. Even a few African-American Vaughts who took the name from their Landholder before the Civil War.

Tom Vaught

A few Vaughts have been involved in Motorsports. More were Generals in the Military the last 50 years though.

With the holidays and some jobs to be completed around the house not much has been done on the dragster, but that is now changing. It must as racing season is racing towards us. The Gasser Series schedule has been posted, NDRL schedule has been posted and we want to go to the Inaugural East Coast Hot Rod Reunion. Club racing organization meeting is fast approaching, so as you can see time is running out.,..

After many measurements, talks with DJ Safety, the blower bag and five strap restraint has been ordered and will be here next week (there will be a car nuts meeting next Saturday!

Jim spent some time and completed the plumbing for the "K" valve. The hard lines for the idle, return and high speed lean out are now complete.

Bill took on the task of blocking off the BDS Pop Off valve as we have installed a burst panel, and contributed to the design of the new fuel pump mount. Note that there are no longer any springs holding the pop off valve in place, which it is now solidly bolted in place.

Bob took on the fabrication of a bracket for the G-Force sensor and rerouting the wires for the fuel pressure, temperature sensor, and boost sensor for the data logger. The wire for the boost sensor needs to be sent back to RPM performance to have the en put on it.

The throttle cable has been rerouted from the left side to the right side and now is on the front of the engine. We still have to do something for a return spring, and I finally want to get to a foot cup for the go pedal.

We also made great progress on the fuel pump mount bracket. We puzzled over how to locate the pump so that the feed and return lines could run in back of the front engine plate, and be able to mount the fuel shut off valve directly to the pump. It turns out to be a very simple solution. All we had to do was turn the pulley for the fuel pump around and it pushed the location of the pump back to just the right location so that the plumbing is in back of the front engine plate and there is enough room for the shut off valve. We were unable to complete the finish height of the pump because the 90 degree elbow for the lower side of the pump has not arrived. Another task for the car nuts. I really want to get this done so that the fuel system can be sent out to be flowed and a tune-up supplied.

Well guys Thanks again for showing up on a bleak winter day and helping out. As always all are welcome.

I have updated the web site and many more pictures and commentary is available for your viewing pleasure at

Made some progress this morning. Bob showed up to help out.

Ray finished the machine work on the remote mount bracket for the pump and we were able to clamp it in place, fit the belt and get the correct length on the rest of the lines.

Fuel supply and returns are complete and can now be sent out to Spud to be flowed and a base line tune up supplied.

There will be an official Car Nuts meeting this Saturday starting around 9:00 AM. Lots of small projects to do.

I have updated the web site with additional pictures and commentary. This is the link http://www.leverfamilysite.com/2010_...2013_01_20.htm

So attached is a link to this week's Car Nuts meeting. I have incorporated it into last week's update and completely reworked it.

You can find it at this link.
http://www.leverfamilysite.com/2010_...2013_01_20.htm

We got the fuel system completed and sent out to Spud Miller

Marked up modifications needed to the blower bag and sent out to DJ Safety

Got the restraint strap brackets mounted

Got the gaskets cut down for the spacer and blower.

Fixed the POOR fit of the aftermarket valley pan and intake manifold

Got the coolant outlet mocked up

Got the burn down tubes mounted on the new valve covers

So all in all had two good weeks

Thanks for the updates, Glenn. All this detailed documentation will help me when I go through similar steps (hopefully later this year).

Did you send the fuel system to Spud as shown in the one picture (hat, pump, lines, etc)? I haven't decided whether or not to have my system flowed.

Jim

Yes, I sent everything.

I talked with him first and agreed that would provide a good start point and refence for bleed down on the pop offs

I'm guessin' you meant barrel valve setting (as a leakdown number)?

Once again I have shown my inexperience in an area, this time in mechanical fuel injection. You are correct I was talking about leak down.

When are you going to sell me your hemi heads? The MT remote oil filter adapter is still alive and well.
