It took a few week to get all the parts together but tonight I finished the out side bullet mirrors.

Carefully I use a putty knife to remove the original scratched up mirrors. No problem as they are just held on with 4 small dabs of silicone.

I cleaned & painted all the stuff you’ll never see and noted some color markings on the remote cables that I tried to duplicate.

The replacement mirrors from OER were too big so I had my brother who runs a glass shop sand them down to match the old ones. Then I had the local engraver laser the date code. They used one of the original mirrors to test and match the size & font.

Pat

PS My brother’s shop broke the one mirror not me!

Pat

Fantastic job on this vehicle.

Did you find that your M/C was gray? It is my belief that it should be black as evidenced by some original cars I have seen over the years.

Looks great!
You can find dated coded mirrors once in a great while but the date is never what your looking for and that laser job looks dam near perfect.
Thanks and keep posting your progress for us all to enjoy! Looking forward in seeing the finished car.

Bob,
I’m not sure as the original M/C had been replaced sometime in its life but from other 72 T/A & old picture I think it should be cast color.
Thanks!
Pat

So you think that sometimes they painted them and sometimes not? Within the same model year or from MY to MY? I think black across the board!

This isn't like that little bird on the dash is it? Sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right! LOL

Yes Bob that is what I think. I might be wrong, but I also might be right. Its all pure speculation anyway with no real way to prove one way or another. Mine is currently black, but I might paint it cast before you come to The Uprising this year. Did you ever find the master that you were looking for?

Yes I did and it is black! Form74 had one. It is crusty but looks like it will be a nice candidate for a rebuild.

70-71 MC's were black. We went through this last year on a couple threads. My guess is 72 would be the same. I thought for ever they were natural and would have argued all day long they were never black. I then restored at least 15 in a row original EB's (even some from GTO's-GTO's used a different EB stamping font than our FB's large EB font) and they all had remenants of black paint on them. Using acid baths on the MC's, even the crusty rusted ones would come out of teh acid bath with remenants of the original black paint... Blasck semi is whatthey had... now primer, just a single coasting of black to keep them from flash rusting. The port openings had stickers placed over the openings before painting to keep the brass sealing surface from getting paint on them, this left the machined pad fresh machined shiney around the port openings.. I take the brown 3M grit pads(like equiv. of 80-100 grit) that are used on my .....oh hell...can't recall the name of the air tool...looks like a mini orbital sander... 2" diameter pads or so... harbor freight sells them...on my port pads to clean/cut down to shiney bare metal , tape the pad off then give a single spray of semi black... I put cosmoline on the shiney bare port opening pads to keep them from flash rusting...

Oh...if anyone needs one, I have a 73-74 Master NOS in the box. Needs restoring, but it is NOS and the right part number. Just over the years it has rusted on the exterior and in the fluid wells... Just PM me if needed...

Please do Bill! I'm curious to see if it has the bleeder screws or just the undrilled bosses for the bleeder screws which would be correct for a 74. 73's had the bleeder screws. What do you charge to restore an M/C that I have? PM me if you prefer.

There should be a part number around the forward Bleeder where the milling is in small front.
Dont sand them off Bill ?
Oh, if Bob doesn't buy it let me know since I'd like to be next in line!

Brew....I know what you are describing ...not all seem to have it, but most I have seen do. Anyway, this is why I always use these 3M pads.. I swear...I still cannot recall what they are called, but they are like the pads you use in your kitchen to scrub pots, but are either 2"-4" diameter and screw on to a round faced piece that fits in a die grinder or drill.. HarborFreight/NAPA sells them in green and brown.... Usually you see them in green(finer grit) but the brown ones bring the bare metal out, removing all the rust/grime without grinding these small font numbers off.. really work out nice... ANyway, I will get out and take pictures and part numbers today.. I am pretty sure this does not have bleeders, just the bosses are there but never drilled. It has been over a year since I looked , bought in a batch of NOS pontiac parts I bought from a closing dealer in Nebraska 2 years ago...

Bill:

The answer to your question is Scotchbrite. They are called Scotchbrite pads. They actually come in several levels of courseness/colors. Very handy! I use them quite often for cleaning without removing metal.
