Anyway, back to tubes. This is a set of Ampex R2R. Bottom a pro mono 351; top a stereo consumer F44. For those of you out there that like 50's stuff, it was most likely recorded on the 351 deck. That innocent looking F44 was Gordon Holt's deck back in the day. The Stan Kenton tape shown sounds outrageous on the 351 as it is a 2-track linear.

The Citation 19 was a 100W/channel amp. I remember it being very heavy. When I bought it, I could have gotten a Citation 16 amp (150 w/channel) for not a lot additional money. I thought that was overkill.

The only problem I was having with the system was the pre-amp. If I remember correctly, I think I was getting some corrosion on one of the push buttons that controlled device selection. Sometimes I would have to push the button in/out a couple of times to get a clean connection.

I also have a pair of Infinity Infinitesimals that I had installed in the back of a Suburban briefly. They've been in a closet since the mid-80s.

Great thread! Kudos to JSchmitz for starting it. I love the 70's vintage Pioneer car stereo equipment that some of you have posted. That stuff wasn't in my budget back in the day.

I started this setup back in 82 when I dropped in to a pawn shop and saw the amplifier on a shelf. I gave the man $99 and have been rocking it ever since. Speakers, tape players, CD players, receivers, and turntables have come and gone but, the 9500 has never disappointed me.

I would be remiss if I didn't give a big thanks to Doug at Audio Specialties who has kept the unit in tip top shape over the years.

To keep the missus happy I built a cabinet to hide it away and the big old Klipsch speakers had to be traded for some wall mounts as part of the deal with her. 🙂

I say bring back the silver front panel receivers! I really hate the black front panel most, if not all, manufacturers use.

What model were the Klipsch? Sorry to hear they had to be traded for wall mounts... they are probably worth 5-10x what you sold them for now!

I've loved cars for almost as long as ive loved music. I've always had lots of vinyl but mannnny years ago a friend who owned a couple of well know record shops in the city really got me hooked on tube gear and all the gear that comes along with it. ha.

I've cobbled this system together over the years, very much on the cheap. the amps are a pair of Mac MC40s, the preamp an MFA Magus, the horns are a pair of Altec Model 19s that I grabbed in the early 2000s for ... wait for it .... $40. there was no way they were gonna fit in my Jetta so I had to dismantle them to get them in the car. and it took two trips. on top are a pair of JBL 077 high freq tweeters which are for "air" ... theyre very sweet. finally there's a Maplenoll turntable which features an air bearing platter and air bearing linear arm.

the system sounds like real life even at low volumes. the trick is finding time anymore to get downstairs and listen to something!

PS when in HS my Goat, that I still own, had a pair of Mindblowers in it ..

I'm one of the few at 72 that has perfect hearing.
It's pretty hard to believe all my late friends that had tinnitus or needed hearing aids because of the abuse over the years

They were Forte's. Their trade in value was about 1/3 of the Willson Audio Watch's that replaced them in 2010.

Very nice! The thing about those speakers is the efficiency. 40W is enough to do the job. Love the Diskwasher & D4, I still have mine.

When I was a teenager in the mid-70's, FM radio was all the rage. Most cars didn't have am/fm radios, but Radio Shack would sell you the neat item below.
They weren't stereo, but they weren't AM either!

I put an aftermarket FM stereo 8 track radio on a pull-out underdash mount in my Lemans Sprint. never listened to AM after that.

My Dynaco PAS-3X and ST-80 were built from kits in H.S when I was 15 or 16 (~70). Haven't used either in a few years but they have meaning for me.

Bought the AR turntable new in college, 73 or 74. I rebuilt it last year and it keeps on ticking.. still in use. Simple but well-engineered at the time. Budget decency.





Used all this for about 3 decades with some Infinity speakers but they finally rainbowed after sitting idle for many years.
