Default 66 2+2 dead no electic

Hey Guys - I've been trying to get my old user name CMill2+2 going for a month but the admin wont respond so signed up for a new account.

Anyway need some electrical help from you guys as I suck at diagnosing power issues. I was trying to get my 2+2 up and running again and found I had a dead battery, went down to walmart got another battery and she turned right over and started up after sitting for 5 years. My son was watching the engine and yelled "shut it off now", the rear carb was squirting gas. So got the carbs rebuilt 2 weeks later while installing them I accidentally hit the power wire on the back of the alternator with my wrench while tightening down the front carb and it sparked. Finished up not thinking that would have done anything but when I went in to start her up to check for fuel leaks there is no power, I mean nothing the headlights don't even turn on. Tested battery good, picked up another alternator still nothing since there isn't any fuses or anything under this hood I'm now not sure where to go next.

Anybody run into this before? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

The main power that goes to the alternator (red wire?) connects to a bunch of other wires in a wiring loom behind the alternator. (tape maybe?)

Possibly it melted there or came apart where it doesn't feed the rest of the car.

One other thing is the regulator may have screwed up, but would think there would still be power to car at least in some spots.

Check the fusible-link wire. Doesn't take much of a short to blow it out.

Does it have a fusible link in the harness that could have gotten fried?

I didn't see a reference to a fusible link.

I don't see a fusible link in there anywhere, I'm going to pull as much of the harness out to inspect.

Do you think it could have fried the Starter solenoid?

Solenoid may be OK, but it might have fried the wire to it?
Check with voltmeter where you have 12 volts and don't?
(probably 12 volts to starter, but none from starter to alternator?)

Check the wire going to the main terminal on the starter

I looked at a '65 diagram...there is a "shunt" which in the same location as a fusible link. It's purpose is to feed the ammeter, and is actually a small resistance which can be damaged by a high current blast, which is what you did. Follow the cable from the alternator to where it spliced in to other wires...that's your spot.

See if you can find a new or good engine harness. It won't take long to swap it. I did it to my 65 2+2.
