Guess you guys don't like the price. Have no idea how complete & original drivetrain is with the linked '72 TransAm.

One thing for certain, an all numbers match '72 TransAm, ESP a factory M22 car, even with considerable rust & surface rust is not a cheap 20-30k buy in, those days are gone.

I was thinking the same, in my neck of the woods anything with decent floors and somewhat complete is going for silly silly prices.

The fact that so many guys are cutting vintage cars apart for the parting out business, made anything vaguely vintage and in one piece a hot ticket item.

I bought a 72 TA in about the same condition as the topic 72 TA around the mid-80s. I paid $300 for it, and the only thing non-original was the block. I ordered all-new GM sheet metal for it from the local Pontiac Dealer it was sold new from.......hood, fenders, front valance, rear quarter panels, tail panel, etc. After a few years of working on it, I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel so I parted it out before adding any of the new sheet metal. Fast forward to today, and that would not have happened!!! How times have changed. Anyway, I ended up buying a friends 71 TA with the original motor and in driver condition for $6500, with no rust and new paint,

I parted out about ten 1970 - 1972 Trans Ams in the 1980s. None were anywhere near as rough as this car. I think the car I regret parting out the most was a rust free very early 1971 T/A, white automatic with a/c. The owner kept it in a oversized single car garage at the back of the house. When Hurricane Hugo ripped through the Charlotte area, it dropped a large tree on the garage. The garage roof supported most of the weight, but a limb put a massive dent in the roof of the car. The owner's insurance totalled the car, and I was able to buy it. I talked to a couple of people about replacing the roof, but cost was too high, even with me providing the replacement roof. This car was an oddball, it had a 3.07 12-bolt limited slip rear end. It was one of the first 71 T/As to roll off the assembly line.

Now that is a sad story.

What do you think it would cost to restore this one hypothetically? If you did the labor yourself and had the parts/wherewithal?

Would you break even if you auctioned it off post restoration or not possible?

If it can't be restored for $20K it's overpriced. Restored cars selling at auction the last few years were selling in the 58-66K range.

If it was a Lucy blue car that would change things I my eyes. Only 4 speed cars came with no console. M22 with all original numbers. That is about correct. But white. Meh. not as rare. to each his own.

While I agree with you, that is what would make the most sense. The problem is everyone think they can "restore" a car for cheaper than what people ask for restored one.

Obviously most people end up with way more money in their restoration project than what the car will ever be worth.

At least when you restore a basket case project you can make it the color and powertrain combo you always dreamed of and also make sure the resto is done proper, since there are alot of car flippers out there that put lipstick on pigs

A 100-point restoration on that car would be money lost at the sale of it. A good friend and I have hashed out the subject many times in the past. He does full-blown total restorations and has won many awards with customers' cars he has built back to factory specs. His paint jobs start at 20K, and thats with no metal or bodywork. He and I have come to the conclusion that when finished, the said project car needs to be worth over 100K when it rolls out of his shop. If not, the customer has lost money already. JMHO

not really correct on the "only 4 speed cars came with no console". if you ordered an automatic and didnt order console you got a column shift.

I remember seeing a 73 SD-455 TA at the P.S.N. in the 90s that was a no-console column shift automatic.

I have a 1970 T/A blue column shift auto with a/c. The original buyer traded in his car and continued to drive it for months before his car was delivered. He was really upset when it came in with column shift.

Can you say rare. Possible but very unlikely. But you are correct. Just playing the odds. 95% 4 speed car.

There was a 70 T/A, Polar White w/ RED interior column shift in S OKC in the mid 80's.
One of the most oddball '70 T/A's I've ever ran across. Always wondered what happened to it.
