1969 Catalina Clicking/Squeaking From Front Of Driveshaft
Had a clicking/squeaking sound that I thought was in the rear wheel until I turned the rear wheel with the car jacked up and found the noise coming from the front of the driveshaft. About 1 click per revolution. So I thought easy, I’ll replace the ujoints. Did that this week and drive the car to work this morning and it sounds a bit worse. I do have a trans pan leak so I’m always topping off trans fluid. It is about a pint low at the moment. Could it be lack of lubricant to the front of the driveshaft in the transmission? I have no idea what it could be otherwise. Thanks in advance.

The speedo cable turns very easy. The noise is coming from inside the trans where the nylon speedo driven gear is. I’m going to pull it out this week and get a replacement and see if that works. Without looking at it I can’t picture how it’s clicking but with a stethoscope that’s exactly where it’s coming from.

Today I removed the speedo driven gear housing and looked at the driven gear and the drive gear. They look great and the noise is still there even with the driven gear taken out of the housing. When you look in the opening while turning a rear wheel the weighted arms on the governor flop open and make the clacking sound. I’m going to pull out the governor and make sure the valve is moving and the springs are in place. I’ll keep you posted.

Took the governor apart last night and thoroughly cleaned the valve and the inside of the cylinder. Everything moves freely and valve slides up as it should when both arms are moved together. Before I put a gear back on, I pushed on the bottom of the valve and both arms retract as they should. Installed the gear, put it back in the car and still the noise. One arm flops freely and the other stays retracted from fluid pressure. I guess I’ll try another rebuilt governor but I’m starting to suspect that it’s losing fluid pressure somewhere. The bore that the governor came out of looks clean with no pronounced grooves. Maybe the whole transmission needs to be rebuilt.

Could it be coming from the tail shaft seal? It could be dry if car doesn't drive much.

I put a rebuilt governor in it and it shifts beautifully now. After all this the noise turns out to be the hubcaps. Put a little grease on the steel wheels like I read elsewhere on the forum and the noise is gone. Unbelievable the lengths I’ve gone to to get rid of hubcap noise. Quiet as a church mouse now.

Thanks for giving us the solution to your problem! This stuff can be frustrating but I think you better get that stethoscope checked out.

Odd noises happen! Brother was all set to go skiing up the mountains with his buddies. Using dad's station wagon they turned around after thinking the rear was going to blow up. turned out to be wind going pass the ski's on the roof.
Glad you found the problem.
