in case anybody cares what a dana 60 looks like under a 65 ... and i am curious if anyone knows of a rear sway bar that will fit.

Thanks for all the comments, after reading on here, talking with others and to the great Moser tech support I'm leaning..
Moser 12, 30 spline axles and Eaton trutrac, 3.73 and 11" Dynapro brakes with parking option. After other options and powdercoating it's $6000, damn!!! The Moser 9" I'm getting for my GN was the same price, so far no deal if I buy both, rough. LOL Thanks everyone, never got deep into the rear ends but it was sad to see there aren't a lot of options to get the 8.2" to survive 600tq and hard hooking 4000lb launches over time.

Yeah that's hard to swallow.
My son just bought a 9 inch from quick performance. Aluminum center section, true trac and 3.50 gear, 31 spline axles drilled with multiple bolt patterns, fill and drain plugs and a jack pad, along with disc brakes and parking brake setup complete for $3200 |

Speedmaster that makes heads also has aluminum "pumpkins" not sure strength. Them you get into 3.062 bearings or bigger in pumpkins!

When I do the Quick Performance 9" vs Moser 9" there's a $1600 difference and the Moser had more options so it's closer to $1400 etc.
Just got word that Moser will ship both for free, $450 savings so that's a little better. Quick Performance is 8 WEEKS out Moser 5-8 DAYS out, huge difference

I think Strange is base out of the Chicago area. Might be worth giving them a call if it is in your area. They have 9” options also.
The cheapest and strongest aftermarket option in a A body is actually a Strange Dana 60. |

I'm buying both rear ends at $12k and asked about it, they got back later and said sure.
But saving $450 on total shipping is like 3.75% so it's not that great a deal. LOL

I just picked mine up yesterday for my 68 FB from Spohn's Performance. Took 10 days from the time I ordered it. I also got the 1350 yoke, 33 spline axles, True-Trak, 3.91 gears, powder coating and aluminum girdle cover. I'm using my stock drum brakes. Cost was a little over $3600 before tax and shipping. My car is equipped with a 2004R trans.

Speedmaster has some for 35 spline that are the bigger bearings too. Residential shipping is more expensive plus a lot of stuff like rear ends they require a fork lift!
3200 is a good deal! Needing a 9" for the Impala project with the extra upper control arm bracket on it.

Didn't know the 12 bolt is roughly 3.5% more efficient and about 30lbs lighter than a 9" (though 9" can drop 15lbs on aluminum 3rd member). But you trade pinion strength for this higher efficiency so at my GTO power level I'll take the 12 bolt but for my GN that's already 850tq and going higher in the future, I'll go 9".

The 12 bolts can be built pretty tough and handle more than given credit for.
Still running a stock GM 12 bolt in dad's goat with 764 ft lbs. of torque and 4100 lbs. race weight. It's been in the car for more than 30 years and raced with various 455's while pretty much being a stock 12 bolt. All I've done to that 12 bolt is install c-clip eliminator axles from Strange but they are still 30 spline. Those things are over 3 decades old LOL Up until last year it was a stock GM posi unit that I put new clutches in way back then. Just last year it showed signs of slipping in the burnout box after 30 years of abuse so I upgraded it to a tru-trac last year, and at that time I bumped up the yoke to a billet 1350. Yes all that time it was a stock yoke and never broke. It was at this time he also removed the stock driveshaft for a beefier 1350 piece. I then installed a support cover on the rear too for a little added insurance. I don't even worry about it. Automatics are pretty easy on things. So when you're talking about a Moser or Strange 12 bolt, everything about them is beefy to start with. The center casting is beefier, the axle tubes are slightly larger in diameter and also made from a thicker wall tubing. Inside the center casting has much larger main caps to hold the center section in place, the Strange 12 bolt I ran in my Fbody had billet caps, and you'll also notice more beef cast around the pinon bearing area. They've been improved greatly and as a result they are also a little heavier than a GM 12 bolt. You aren't going to break it. Last edited by Formulajones; 02-16-2024 at 02:29 PM. |

If it makes you feel better, I have stock GM 12 bolts in almost everything here, some are 4 speeds and see abuse and make decent HP. With an auto it's even less of a concern.
I've been racing my SS Chevelle with it's stock 12 bolt since 1987. All I did to it back then is install a Moroso brute strength posi unit and a pair of stock c-clip style 30 spline axles from Moser which are beefier (non tapered) than the original pieces. I did that because I didn't want to cut on the housing for C-clip eliminators. I do have a 1350 yoke in that one because I upgraded the driveshaft. It's also 4100 lbs. race weight. I haven't touched that rearend since 1987. Been beating on that car ever since with 600hp/tq and now installing a 598 that makes 786hp/772tq. I doubt I'll revisit the rearend other than maybe taking some gear out of it for the new engine, I don't think I'll need a 4.10 anymore. With that said I'll have to change the 4 series posi unit so I'll probably swap it for a tru-trac at that point. Otherwise I have no reason to disturb it. |

I do know in a previous discussion years ago Pontiac Dude said he lost no time/mph switching from a 12 bolt to a 9" in his Trans Am.

I disagree with Sun Tuned that the 9.3 is stronger than the 9". I have been racing Pontiacs since the 1960's and the 9.3 is the only rear end that I ever broke the center case. This was on a 1962 Catalina making maybe 375-400 hp, 4 speed and 7" (yes 7") wide M?T slicks. Never hurt the ring and pinion just the case.
