Wayne Carini and a 1958 Pontiac Star Chief wagon
A two minute video of Wayne Carini checking out a 1958 Star Chief station wagon at the Mecum auction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3mKYO1tdto It's a very cool car. I don't know if they were factory installed or not (it would have been a special order) but it has period correct bucket seats.

Anyone know what the wagon sold for, if in fact it did actually sell?

Hammered at 95k, with buyers premium 104.5k. We saw Wayne several times thru the week, both out at the tents and on the block. He's a very nice guy to talk to. He's there almost every year if not every year.

I wondered about that as well. I know chrome is expensive but that seemed excessive. Maybe he was thinking worst case scenario, if you started with very pitted originals and went for concours quality.

I too balked at that figure
perhaps that was a quote from Pauls Chrome. Have you seen the dashboard of a 58?Chrome for days.

Yeah, if you had one of those in poor condition I can imagine it would cost an arm and a leg to restore.

He was just running his mouth if he'd paused a second or two he wouldn't have have said 250k.

Maybe 50k for chrome and stainless polishing.
Spoke before thinking, he knows there’s no way a car selling in the area of 100k would have a quarter million dollar chrome bill. That wagon probably sold for about half what it cost to restore.

Yes, it's a Pathfinder (base model)

I'm guessing it's even more rare than the US wagon. Neat find.

Probably a $25,000 chrome bill.

Hey Stuart,
Yes, not many around here, that was part of the appeal. Being a Canadian Pontiac, means it has Chev drivetrain and suspension. (261 inline 6) I am not sure how the Pontiac and Chev suspensions differ, but ordering Chev parts seems much easier than Pontiac parts, as I have already purchased front upper and lower control arms, and a front disc brake kit, for a 58 Chev. This is a long term project, as the rust is everywhere , but I enjoy the process. Thanks for that video, I now have some inspiration, cause what I am working on has very little resemblance to that car. |
