64 Lemans - Poverty Caps
Hello.
I recently purchased a set of original 14x5 rims and the PMD poverty caps. Question. How do you install the poverty caps. I assume there are some clips needed. Do I need to drill any holes or do the clips go over the 5 studs somehow. Any input would be greatly appreciated as you can see I have no idea ! Thank you !!! You mean like these? No clips involved, they just press onto the wheel. The wheels have locating nubs around the perimeter of the center raised portion and the inner back side rim of the cap just fits over those for a friction fit.

You have to carefully pop them on without denting them.
Getting them off you’re easily damaging them unless you take note of where the nubs on the wheel center are located. Pry carefully with a tire spoon right where one of the nubs are located and you’re much less likely to bend up the bottom edge of the caps. Prying between the nubs is how you ruin them.

I'm probably not remembering correctly, but it seems there are 3 of those aforementioned "nubs" on the wheel. If the wheel surface is nicely painted, take care to protect it as the pry tools can mar the paint a bit.

It could depend on the year but some wheels have 3 nubs and some wheels have four.
My 14” wheels all have 3 and I had some 15” wheels with four. Pictured below, a 14x6” early ‘70s disc brake wheel with 3 nubs and some custom-built 17x8s that were built off of 15” centers with four nubs.

Position the standard cap over two nubs first.
Then carefully push over the last third nub. A very important hint. Apply a small amount of vaseline on the outer lip of the 3 nubs which allows the caps to slide over much easier. Below is a 1965 GTO wheel with red lines showing the 3 nubs.

Getting on is easy…..getting off without scratching rims is a little more challenging. I taped up a medium sized pry bar but I think they make a tool for getting them off

Sounds like marking with a small paint dot where the nubs are may be a good thing before mounting so you know where the are after the caps are installed.

If you study the wheels with 3 nubs, you will notice that one nub is 180 degrees across from the valve stem, so that would be helpful later.

Andre, you beat me to it. Going to the attic to ck my wheels in storage to confirm and ck for a date stamp. I like the Vaseline idea, what about a little anti-seize?

Just a little side trip -
is there a demand for stock steel wheels? (I have 5 that came with my Lemans, with no idea if they are original or not, but the rest of the car is.) Dan |
