66 GTO - Odd Data Tag
Hello guys, I found and bought what I think is an original paint California car '66 GTO . It appears to be Starlight Black, but the Data Tag reads "SPEC" next to paint. Has anyone seen this, or know what it means?
Thanks in advance. |

I believe it means special order paint. If it's black now and looks original, perhaps someone changed the color early on in its life. Check carefully to see if you can find any traces of a previous color - look behind interior panels, under the edges of window gaskets, etc.

Look under the edge of the carpet under the sill plates. Usually some overspray there.

Also look around the door hinges and where the trunk hinges mount. Behind the door striker should also be painted, unlike '68 and up.

Thanks guys. I don't have the car, yet, but I'm looking forward to doing a thorough search. Plus, I'll do a PHS

You should be in for a surprise soon with SPEC for paint code.
But to me a 66 looks best in Black. |
