Camshaft i.d.
Hi, can anyone identify this cam in the picture? Thanks.

Those letters are just the cam core company identification. Most every factory cam as well as many aftermarket cams have those letters cast into the cam core.
Take it out and look for numbers stamped on the rear journal or on the nose and you might be able to identify it. Unfortunately that picture won’t help you identify it.

Do you think it's a stock Cam?
What's the stamped code on the passenger front of the block below the deck surface ?

Thanks for replying, the code is WU. The motor was rebuilt in the 90s by Larry Maxwell who lived in Salinas at the time. I believe I asked for an 068, but not really sure what ended up in it. I have the heads off right now for an unrelated problem and was considering a camshaft upgrade, but was wondering where I am now. Its in good shape with low mileage, so not sure a change would be worth while.,

I would want to upgrade from a 068 as well, .... but if you have not driven it much since the 90's why bother..

It shouldn't be hard to measure the lobe lift without removing the camshaft. If both lobes turn out to be around .271 lift. you'll have a pretty good idea what your next step might be.... JMO you probably aren't impressed with the current cam. If that's the case, remove the cam, identify it and move forward.

I liked the 068 from Pontiac in street driven 400,421s back in the 60s Just good all around. Jim Mino told me he tried the 744 and 068 in his 68 F stocker drag car with #16 heads,he felt the 068 gave better all around performance were the 744 was more peaky. I never ran a 744. Maybe todays cam technology is better.

I rotated the cam further while working on it and surprisingly found numbers 524886 which indicates it is indeed an 068 cam. Thank you to those who responded to my question, I appreciate it.

524886 identifies the casting core used, it does not identify the cam grind. It very well could be the 9779068 cam ground on a 524886 blank but many other different cams were ground on that same blank casting.

The 524886 is lower lift,283-293,.400 lift. older Pontiac design if I remember correctly. I bought one new then realized the 068,288-302,414 lift, had more lift so I sold the 886 and bought the 068.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
If you asked for an 068 cam I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t have put one in, popular cam that’s not hard to find.

Knowing I have a mild cam, do you think it worth while to do any head porting while they are off the car? Or should I start a new post? Thanks.

If you are using an 068 cam most of your power gains would come from good valve and seat work, not actual "grinding" in the port. Adding 1.65 rocker arms will usually give a nice gain in power.
