Was the casting crap found small enough to get through the pickup screen, or was it still in the pump.

Did the drive gears look chipped anywhere?

Doing a search and several people do it as standard including Cliff. I don't know enough about the reasoning so leave it to the engine builders.

So if the bypass in the oil filter housing is blocked off, I'm hoping your running an oil filter with a bypass. or a Wix high flow racing oil filter.
Maybe, I don't know enough about it either. Thoughts?

He said it was in the pump under the ball when he took it apart. Gears looked okay.

I had been using Wix and K&N filters on my last engine (same block) he's using K&N on the dyno. I have bought some Baldwin filters to use when I get it back.

Default Blocked oil by-pass

I believe he is referring to the old HO Racing manual but they stipulated you "must" use an oil filter with an internal by-pass. I received their monthly news letter years ago and the Lee Max Filter was the one they said to use. Maybe a member would know if any one still makes them ???
