70 Formula AC Decal code
Can anyone tell me what the 2 character "picking" code and part number should be on the non ram air/non California air cleaner for a 70 Formula?
If someone could post a picture as well, that would be great! Thanks! |

bringing this back up. I am looking for this info as well.
Anyone have a pic of an original 1970 Formula, dual snorkel air cleaner decal? (without Ram Air) ...or know what the correct 2 letter code should be? I see several different decals for sale with different codes on them |

I never knew this thread was about air cleaners?
Thought it was for Air Conditioning. Anyway don't really know the answer, but from some Van Nuys buildsheets, possibly 'RO' is for a non-RA air cleaner? Don't have any Norwood buildsheets, and just a few for Formulas. Most for TA's. (still not many) The Assembly Manual has a page for the Air cleaner part #'s:

My 70 Formula (non-Ram Air, invoice date of 5/11/70), has an air cleaner with code RO, (part # 6486116), ink stamp inside base 5/7/70. Norwood car, non-CA emissions. Air cleaner base has the vent hole with plug.

Guess it’s possible that my air cleaner has been switched, but the date (5-7-70) is very close to the invoice date of car (5-11-70).

What is the difference between the 6485988 and what you have?
(don't know what the differences are other than the RA cleaner would be different?) Is the 6485988 a RA air cleaner? Pretty sure the 6486116 is not a RA air cleaner. Never looked into the Air Cleaners, myself.

I believe that the 6485988 (RM) is the same as the 6486116 (RO), except the RO has the hole for the carburetor vent, (California carb). Both are non Ram Air dual snorkel. My understanding is the vent hole had a plastic plug in place on the RO when used on a non-CA car in 1970.
Seems the assembly manual is saying the Norwood used RA while Van nuys used RO, and with a plug if car was shipped outside Cali. I’m unsure.

That last line above should read “Norwood used RM while van nuys used RO”

Not sure of that?
The buildsheets I have for the Formulas without RA hoods have RO air cleaners. Don't know what the numbers for it are though. It justs shows 'RO'. (why I said it probably was a RO code before) Ones with RA hoods (air cleaners) had 'RR' as the pick code? (TA had 'RS')

They also had NA9 (evap Emissions) and no HD air cleaner.

No BEST. The 3rd repro. was as close as I could get. If you're going to GTOAA Nationals or Ames shows, I can bring one to sell there. Quote:
The plug was rubber. The RO air cleaner, I believe, was the one stocked at Van Nuys and may have been available to Norwood after a while. The Ram Air air cleaner decal (RR) is available and is like the RO in quality. The 6486117 (RP) HD air cleaner w/vent hole is not available in repro., nor is the 6485989 (don't know the pick code).

Ok, just to make sure I have this straight (because I previously thought I did);
1970 Formula aircleaner decals: RR = L74 (RAIII) Van Nuys & Norwood. RO = L78 (400/4bbl) Van Nuys; air cleaner assembly with vent hole - possibly used on some Norwood cars - but the carb vent hole plugged. RM = L78 (400/4bbl) Norwood; air cleaner assembly without vent hole. I previously only recall reading about RR & RM decals, and had thought the decal was about the air cleaner configuration, and had no bearing on plant, or presence/absence of the 70-CA vent hole ect. I do not recall reading about this RO decal!

Ram Air air cleaner had the one design, with the vent hole and plugged when correct carb. was used. I don't know why they didn't have one stamping (which the L78's air cleaners all basically were) and did the same with different air filters and plugs for the correct carbs. vs the two.

One more data point: RM was the broadcast code used for my 04C Norwood Formula's L-78 (non-RA) air cleaner.
