Default Purpose of Vacuum Can?

Did all 1970 A-bodies have a vacuum can on the firewall?

What was the purpose? Do I need it for any reason?

I'm trying to get car running and am revisiting vacuum connections. A vacuum reservoir is not on my car and I don't know if it ever had one.

Car has AC and TH350. I added power brakes and replaced 2bbl with QJ. I just got QJ idling (tnx to shaker455) and plan to start with ported vacuum.

I have a tree on back of QJ base that accepts brake booster, transmission, and vent controls. QJ is Buick so vacuum ports may be different than those on a Pontiac carb. I plan to connect distributor vacuum unit directly to port on front of QJ.

I am not using the TCS solenoid.

Before I try to adjust idle speed or measure mechanical advance curve, I want to make sure a vacuum can wasn't needed. I have not yet measured idle vacuum, but expect it capable of over 15" with stock 350 and Summit 2800 cam.

The can is not needed for what your wanting to do.

The reserve cannister is to keep heat/ac/dash vents working properly when the engine is under load (low vacuum).
