323 Posi Carrier
I have a 323 posi carrier that I plan on putting in my 69 gto. Presently it has a 355 open rear in it. Do different gear sets have different carriers? I think that I read somewhere that I can go to 355 with that carrier, but if I want to go to the 390 or higher I have to get a different carrier. Can I use the 355 ring and pinion from the open unit on the posi carrier? I was really thinking that I would like to go to the 390 for a little more snap. Gas mileage is not an issue as I only put on 300 - 500 miles a year.
Thanks Blair |

I'm pretty sure that you will need a ring gear spacer to go from a 3.23 carrier to a 3.55 ring gear. I have heard some say that they wouldn't use a spacer, and I heard that some have used the spacer with no problems.
I'm sure someone else will chime here to help out. -Bill |

no spacer needed
A 3.55 and a 3.23 are both "3" series carrier. I know you'd think a 3.90 would be, but it is a "4" series...spacer needed.

3.55 and 3.23 do not use the same carrier in an 8.2 ten bolt rear. A 3.23 carrier will work with 2.93, 3.08, and 3.23 gears. If you want to run 3.55 gears, you will need a 4 series carrier, which accomodates 3.36, 3.55, 3.90, and 4.33 gears. BTDT.

Agreed, the 8.2 is a little different than your average GM carrier. I have used MANY spacers and are not a problem for a street car. The only one we had a problem with was a 10 second drag car launching about 3500 from a tranny brake. Sheared all the bolts off.
You could also order a set of gears for that carrier, they make the ring gear a little thicker to make up the difference of the smaller diameter pinion, if the spacer bothers you. Good luck with it! Dennis

Who makes thick ring gears? I have a 2.78 and would like to run 3.55 for a street car.

Have yet to run across an aftermarket thick 8.2 PONTIAC 10 bolt gear set.
Richmond Gear & Yukon (Randys) are the only game in town for aftermarket 8.2 Pontiac early style ('64-69) gearsets. Back in the dark ages, Zoom offered several very low ratio gearsets. ZOOM was the one that came up with the great idea to refer this style gearset as B-O-P 8.2's. Something that kind of made some sense with the '64-67 Buick & Pontiac manufactured 8.2 10 bolts, absolutely no sense for after 1967. Thicker gear sets are what one occasionally runs across for several other differential styles; examples: THICK 4.10 gearset for a 12 bolt car 3 series's carrier, thin 3.73 carrier for a 12 bolt car 4 series carrier. There's also at least one thick gearset offered for GM 7.5 10 bolt's. Even some specialty run gearsets, offered for Type "O" Olds 10 bolts & 9.3 Olds/Pontiac rears are designed thicker to go on a mid ratio carrier, as the low ratio carriers are so hard to find

2.56 & 2.78 fit the high ratio Pontiac 8.2 carrier. 2.93-3.08-3.23 came on mid ratio carriers 3.36-3.55-3.90-4.10-4.33-4.56- - - 5.57's came or were designed for the low ratio carrier. To use a high ratio carrier w low ratio 3.55 gears, you would need both a nonexistent thick 8.2 Pontiac 3.55 gearset, & an 8.2 Chevy ring gear spacer, & a small bottle of red locktite. Not something I'd painstakingly assemble.

If you end up not using the 3.23 posi carrier and gears, I am interested.
