Default Block Saddle repair

I found a '67 428 engine with 670 heads. I was informed that the motor had a bad knock and the machine shop would be unable to repair the damage to one of the main saddles in the block. This had taken place 15- 20 years ago. I haven't inspected the damage but I did purchase the heads and the 4 bolt main capps. As beat I can tell the block is a standard bore.
My question is can that kind of damage be repaired or is it a boat anchor!

If a saddle is bad and seeing as you bought the three 4 bolt main caps then I can only guess that it’s the number 1 or 5 saddle, and in turn 1 or 5 main cap that’s bad also right?

Thats a really good question. I talked to the machinist and he vaguely remembers the block. I was suprised that he did, being it was so long ago. I figured the the block was damage beyond repair and that the caps would be salvageable if they were damage. Fortunately they seemed to be in good shape. So, I gues the damage.was eaither in 1 or 5.

These days almost anything cast iron can be fixed, but the low end cost to weld up and remachine to have it be right could bring you well above the cost of getting another 428 block, or at the high end of the repair cost end of things within 1000 bucks of a aftermarket block.

Just to repair the beat-up #3 main saddle in my aluminum block, the cost was $1,400.

Used to install main saddle repairs all the time. Do you have any photos of the existing work? Replacing a saddle repair isn’t that difficult IF you have the proper equipment and the experience.
