How to determine brake drum application- Ford 9 inch
My newly acquired 64 LeMans has a 9inch rear. The fella who sold it to me admitted he drove about 45 minutes with the parking brake on - oops! The brake pedal pulsates just a bit and there is evidence of lots of heat into the drums - especially the drivers side. I assume new drums are in order but I don’t know the application and prior owner wasn’t who installed the rear. The drums say max diameter of 11.120 and receipt from another owner indicates drums were drilled for GM bolt pattern. Here are pics for clues to anyone who can help ID these drums. Is there another measurement I should take or more pics to assist?
Second question- do I need to redo all the anti seize on pads? The brake hardware looks decent from visual inspection.

The 11.120 is the maximum size they can be machined to before they're too thin to be safe any longer. So they're 11 inches, and the width of the brake shoes should give you application by size, rather than make, and model.
If they haven't ever been cut before, you might be able to salvage them by having them cut on a brake lathe. since they've already been drilled for GM pattern it may be worth it to try and save them.

I’d have them checked & turned, if possible like Sirrottica said. If they can’t be turned, a company that sells narrowed 9 inch rears should have something already drilled for GM. If it were me, I’d check with Quick. I’ve had good customer service from them.
Good luck! Murf |

I’d bet they’re a very common item used in tons of applications just like the GM 9.5” rear drums.
My GTO had a Ford 9” built by Currie with those exact same 11” drums, pretty sure they’re 2.5” wide. If they can’t be turned they’re surely readily available new but would need to be drilled to 5 on 4.75” GM lug pattern.

I called Quick Performance and they sell the drums with GM bolt pattern for $50 each ($125 w/shipping for the pair) so that'll be my back-up plan if the drums are out of spec for resurfacing.
Thanks all

I run the 9" Ford Explorer Rear Disc Brakes on my 9" Axle.
Prior to that I ran the 11" x 2.5" wide drums. Either one works great. Moser custom rear axle with Strange Center Section. 2.7" Ford Gear Ratio. Tom V.

Pics are deceiving... But it doesn't look like the hole in the drums fit the center hub on the axle.
If so and the drums can shift a little on the lug studs... Just Thinking Out Loud Clay |

Anti-seize is the WRONG compound to use around brake parts.
Service manuals I've seen for GM vehicles recommend some white grease or specialized brake grease for the three contact pads that each shoe rides on, on the backing plate. Well-used backing plates generally have grooves worn into those pads from the shoe contact. Some guys weld 'em up and grind flat again. White grease on the threads of the adjuster. You can try to push some aerosol lube into the park-brake cable sheath; doesn't seem to be easy or particularly efficient. I've greased speedo cables, but they come apart easy for lubing. I've spray-lubed motorcycle clutch and throttle cables using a special tool, but park brake cables are too big for that tool. No anti-seize anywhere. |

My brake shoes measure 2.25” as do the ones from Quick Performance. I dropped off the drums to get checked today
Clay- didn’t see the message Re: them possibly being loose on the drum prior to dropping off so will have to look into this. Also, I believe the rear studs may be oversized - will check in a.m. Schurley - Thanks for the tip Re: no anti- seize

The shop called and advised the hole for the hub is off center and they can’t get the drums to run true on the lathe.
I’m gonna order the drums from Quick Performance. Also, the rear studs are 1/2” so hope the the drums work without having to hone them.

Update - I received the drums from Quick Performance on Thursday and after making sure they fit well I painted them. Of note, as Clay indicated, the old ones were neither hub nor stud centric. The new ones are hub centric and fit nicely on the Moser axles. The pics below illustrate the difference in the hub-hole size - new on bottom.
