Default The New Drivetrain

OK, got the car home yesterday evening. I only have about 70 miles with it so far.

The motor feels and sounds great. Idles with a little lope. Feels like good vacuum for the brakes. Fairly quiet at idle (the video I posted in a different thread sounds louder but it was inside). The Pypes exhaust Sounds really good when you get on it a little, but obviously I'm being very gentle with it for now. I accidentally got into the secondaries for a second and it really started to go. Longest continuous drive so far was about 40 miles at 79 degrees outside, water temp never went past 180. Oil pressure is 35-40 at warm idle and 70 with any increased RPMs. Total timing is 36 degrees and no hint of detonation. No valvetrain noise (Johnson lifters).

The TKX is really great. Moves out nice and smooth in 1st without too much clutch. The OD is really welcome. The McLeod clutch feels great too. My old clutch had pretty good pedal feel too but it had some chatter that was annoying. This one is very smooth. That's with the factory linkage, no hydraulics.

I'm not sure my tach is reading correctly because I got some RPM vs MPH readings that don't make sense when I plug them into the online calculators. So I have to figure that out. I did check the speedo compared to the wife's vehicle and a police roadside radar it is dead on.

I'm pretty happy with the stock appearance.

That engine looks perfect.

The original factory look is what that car deserves.

A monster in disguise.

Thanks. For me, that was an essential part of the project.

What is your bore and stroke? That's a small displacement for an IAII block (not judging, just asking). I assume you used D-ports over RP heads since your car is a RAIII.

4.185 x 4.25. Yep, D-ports.

That's a work of art, jhein. I'd love to have an engine compartment looking that good if/when I build another one.

Minor correction. Final bore ended up being 4.180 x 4.25 stroke.

Love sleepers like that. Nice IA block. At least you don`t have to worry about rpm`s that much. Should last forever in that tune.

You'll never wear out the block with the overbore you can do. Very nice looking set-up.

Whew! just had it out for another drive, this time 40 miles through the backroads. That thing is awesome. That motor is so smooth. Between 2000-3000 RPM it just purs.

BTW, that video with the idle is no good. It was idling at 1050 RPM and that was just enough to smooth it out. Yeah, I'm one of those guys that likes a little lump. I have it at 850 right now and it sounds badass. I'll do another video tomorrow.

Too bad I can't get into it yet. Archie told me the motor is fully broken in but the TKX needs 500 miles of easy driving, so that sucks. LOL.

That was also one of the main goals. IAII, SCAT forged crank, Eagle forged H-beam rods, forged pistons. Hopefully that will all payoff.

If not, It'll be a blast to drive in the meantime! LOL
