Default 8n

I have a 48. The leaking axles in the early 8n's can be solved by replacing the early axle housings with the 50's axle housing and the buying late axles, inner and outer axle seals, replace the old wet brake shoes and you are good to go for years. It will stop so well you can lock the wheels up.

Had a wrecker service pull the tractor out of the ravine today. Here is a list of the damage: front axle all three sections bent, front axle pivot point at the front of the engine block broken, all right side steering links and brace broken, left side steering bent, radiator gone, fan gone, alternator broken at the main mount, Hood completely torn off, steering wheel bent, steering wheel shaft broken, gear shifter torn out of transmission and missing, dash panel bent.
I can buy a nice working tractor with the cost of the parts that I have listed.

That is a lot of damage for sure. Parts tractor, unless you find a blown up tractor and start a big swapping project. I have a friend needing a steering gear box, but yours sounds unserviceable.

I'm going to look at a 1951 8N this week. I need it like a hole in the head but I have always had an attraction to these little tractors. I once had a Ferguson TO-20 but I'm a novice when it comes to these things. The one I'm going to look at says it has a high and low speed transmission which gives it 8 forward and 2 reverse speeds. That's a new one on me. Anybody ever hear of a high and low speed transmission?

Work Tractors, in the old days, did multiple tasks.
Maybe pulling a corn planter one day and hauling hay bales to the barn on a blacktop road to a remote farm another day.
They had, just like over the road trucks, multiple speeds.

Each "range" (Low or High) allowed given speeds. Low Range might be 1,3,5,7 and
High Range might be 2,4,6,8. Low Range in the fields and High Range on the Blacktop roads.

Best I can do for you.

New Ford and GM 10 speed electronic transmissions operate in the same manner with one input shaft and two cluster gear shafts
and they release the driven gear and the next gear is already set to go to work. Very smooth, tractors, you do the shifting.

51 is great for 8n. Side mount distributor, inner seals on axles and every part is available. Two speed is a Sherman box and is rebuild-able like every thing else on the tractor. 26 horse power and about 7 to 1 compression. engine is sleevable but they are very easy to freeze crack the block if you don't run anti freeze. That said they also can be welded to repair. Mike
