clutch & pressure plate options
Got this bad boy the other day a tkx 5 speed..........seeing i need a 26 spline clutch disk, thought i might as well get the pressure plate also..........right now im running a centerforce duel friction..........no issues with it, but looking to maybe get a better clutch with a easy clutch pedal..............my old legs are getting older.
Dont know if this is helpful or not, motor is around 500 hp, cant remember what the torque was, but it was up there........... Any help would be appreciated Rich |

I use a LUK 11" 26 spline Clutch Disc and the LUK 11" Pressure Plate. SMOOOOOOOOOTH.

10.5 and 11 clutch discs have the same basic design and LUK sells both 10.5 and 11" diaphragm clutches and 10 & 26 spline clutch parts.
I believe Tom S has a 10.5" clutch / 26 spline clutch system. No need to upgrade if it is a real street vehicle. Tom V.

I’m using a Luk 10.5 in my 67 with 3:55 gears and maybe 360 HP. Gets the job done and very smooth without big pedal pressure. Pretty much stock. Great for street

I never understood why people put multi-plate clutches in street driven cars. Bragging rights, I guess. LUK are great quality with a very light pedal pressure. I installed a Zoom street/strip fine spline in my '61 Corvette and for the past 3 years it's been great. Light pedal, no chatter, no slipping. The kit was $218 at Summit (out of stock) so I got it from Rock Auto for $108.

I have a RAM pressure plate with organic street disk, very happy. On street tires my 505 hasn't hurt it, the tires break loose long before you hurt the clutch.

When I swapped the TKX in my car I went with an 11" McLeod(75221) dual friction type disc organic/ceramic , Works great, pretty light pedal feel and wasnt overly expensive from Summit $325. I kind of bought into the hype somewhat on the rating of the clutches and could have just done an organic disc both sides as my car isnt a 600-700 hp monster by any means

I've had luck w/ HD Ram street units too. Borg Warner, Brute stop, etc. I put a fancy centerforce dual friction (what does that mean) behind a clutch 535 w/ good traction and it spun it like nothing. Went to a dual disc and that fixed it. My vote w/ street tires (poor traction) is any decent HD unit/Ram, etc. |

When I took the engine out of my 62 Catalina for the new engine a few months ago, I had planned to be in the same position you are in. Shopping for a new clutch. But after removal, I looked it over really well. It had a LUK 11" diaphragm clutch and it looked to be in great shape. It also had a Hays steel flywheel installed. The way they cut corners on everything mechanical on the car, I wasn't expecting that. I am going from an estimated 240-250 HP 455 to an over 500 HP 468. I decided to put the old LUK clutch back in and see how it does with double the HP working on it. It was smooth and quiet with the old engine and the little tires they used on those cars would fry with just 250 HP under the hood. Let us know what you end up with in case I need an upgrade after a few weeks of beating the hell out of the LUK!.

Posted many Times:
Clean the melted bonding glue off the surface of the clutch disc (Both sides) in a glass bead machine. Clean the Flywheel with some spirits to remove the glue on the flywheel. Reinstall the parts and it should work like a new assy but the melted resins will be gone and clutch will last a LONG TIME. Tom V.

I still have NOT driven MINE. 455 TA with an old M21. I installed a ZOOM muscle car clutch...IIRC. pedal is stock feel, NO clue how this is going to work out but teaching 3 teen age boys HOW to drive a clutch...I don't expect it to actually live very long.
