CCC What will it make? Engine #2
Hello fellow PY'ers. I have a new engine hitting the dyno next week, and thought to ask an opinion of what could it make.
I posted back in 2017 about a 470" stock block engine that did well (830HP). I have since added some enhancements and it runs decent for what it is. I hope to improve the ET in the fall down to 9.3 ET if possible from a current best of 9.6 at 3600 lbs. Anyway, on to the new engine. AP 535 CI, IA 2 build (4.35X4.500). JE gas ported pistons with skirts coated and a nice ring package from TS. Napier second, and I think a 15 lb. oil ring. Scat 6.800 rods, SG crank. Canton 2nd gen FB RR pan with trap doors and baffles. AP Crank scraper and windage tray. AP Tigers (64cc) race ready with my home porting. Intakes ported to match the AP large Tiger porter gasket. Before and after the intakes picked up over 50 CFM on my local machinist's bench. I ported the exhausts only to widen the floor over the short turn, and some exit work. Jesel 1.85 rockers. Should be mid 14:1 CR. Cam is a Comp grind, 282-304@.050. 117 LSA with ICL at 115. Lift measured at intake valve with lightweight checker springs was .90X" STD cam tunnel, .842" Isky redzones. Tiger intake home ported to match heads, this manifold is really nice in that it gives lots of flexibility to match much smaller head combos. Cloverleafed on top for an anti reversion plate. 1250 carb calibrated for E-85. Work done by horsepower innovations. 2" hooker second gen F-body headers w/extension. I know, they might be small for the combo. Moroso 4 vane vacuum pump. I have never used one of these deals, so wish me luck with that learning curve please. So much appreciation to Frank at All-Pontiac for his help through the build. This deal was a mess when I got it, and he helped me with lots of technical detail and part selection. To be clear, he didn't have to help with the engine and it's problems as I received it. He did though, and is a stand up guy. Very rare these days! So, any guesses on output? I am expecting 950 and 750 at least. Happy 4th. to all! |

Sounds like 950hp is possible based on parts (a 55mm cam would really help though)
What was your mph with the 9.6 runs? |

I'm just a novice, but I want to guess anyway. I say over 950 hp. Closer to 1000 hp. I too see the headers as holding it back. 2.5" would be nice. That's a pretty stout N/A engine. We did a AP 505 that made 789 hp and 700 T. It's a baby engine compare to this. JMO. Curious on oil pump selection? And wondering how high it will spin too with the 4.5 stroke?

if that doesnt make 950+ hp something wrong. with all those good parts why did you go with .842 lifters?

Originally, I was going to patch it together so I could race it some more the next year (this being 2017). Then I thought, why not port the heads, the manifold, etc? Even then, I ordered a new standard journal cam with the good events to optimize. And it has a cascading effect from there. The Star Galaxy forging being used (which was bent, then repaired and straightened) is not the best, so I probably should have purchased a fully counterweighted billet. And probably should have bought a better rod. I have an aluminum IA2 which at some point will have the best of the best. This silly hobby is dreams constrained by logic and practicality. The logic and practicality are most often opposed, and IMO the reason a lot of builds never happen or end up badly. We will see with this one... |

Sounds like a nice combination. It will make what it makes but 950 is a good target to shoot for…as long as you are satisfied. If it’s sealed up and valvetrain is happy then you should be seeing a great number. What is the intake valve dia? Measure the vacuum in crankcase and intake manifold. There may be some left in the inlet and exhaust. Best of luck with it…and keep us posted.

Dyno day #1 - Gasoline
Results are in, 897HP and 710 ish TQ. Was very hot, not ideal dyno weather but I think it has a chance. Tomorrow E-85, and 1250 carb.
Engine is in one piece, and runs great with no leaks. Happy with that for sure! |
