+ battery cable routing?
For 70-72 +battery cable routing on RA and HO cars, i understand the cable runs from the starter, through cable retainers mounted to the motor mounts, that route the cable UNDER the motor mount and then up to the battery. Is this correct? it looks like only one of the cable retainers is available from Ames, which i have, but i don't know if it mounts to the FRONT motor mount bolt or the REAR motor mount bolt. Some applications have either 2 cable retainers or 3, but the drawings are not very clear. If you have this setup, can you post some photos of it? I have a 68 GTO, but I can't run the cable through the tube that was used 67-69 due to interference between the tube and the cast RA exhaust manifolds so i need an alternate solution, and the 70-72 way seems to be a good choice I don't want to burn the cable and start a fire! Thanks in advance for any advice and solutions. TOM

Originally, on '71 & 72 455 HO & I believe '70 RA builds, there was a stamped steel clip that bolted down off the front & rear motor mount mtg bolts. I've also ran across instances where the rear mtg hole on the long style mount was the only one that used that clip, & a loop style clip bolted further forward off of an oil pan bolt. The latter method may have been a dealership service procedure(?) both routing methods kept the starter wires away from the large exhaust manifold.
On the sideways tube deal, believe Pontiac originally routed the positive starter cable on '68 & 69 HO & RA engines through a sideways version of the tube. This original method basically helped cook the positive starter cable. last year, Winston (69HurstJudge) posted his concern with that style of routing & I believe instead uses the later clip method on his '69.

OG68- that;s the setup i tried, but with the tube mounted to the motor mount, i cant bolt the manifold to the head due to the manifold hitting the tube - there just isn't room for everything. A friend of mine brought over his 69 RAIII judge for comparison and has your setup with plenty of clearance. Just my luck i guess, and differences with aftermarket parts. my car has a 455 with 6x heads, so its nothing unusual.

Here are the two original clips on a 71 RA Judge.

That's what i was looking for. The smaller retainer on the right isnt reproduced. I wonder what the odds are of finding a used one? Or i suppose I could just bend up one of my own. Thanks!

Another tidbit related to this, on 69 RA cars the positive battery cable has a retainer clip on the front of the inner fender, I guess to keep the cable away from the power steering pulley. Same in 70-72? Btw in 69 RA cars without power steering did not use that extra clip. All 69 tubs have the dimple on the tub.
