U-Haul engine in 25' truck?
Wondering on details with the FORD engine/trans iin the U-Haul F650 25' trucks that pulls (22,000 Lb load)+ the truck weight) on 87 Octane? size, ratings, weight? Internet says is it a Vortex 7.3L or 6.8L V10 with a 6-speed auto.
Turbo? rod/stroke? why no ping under load? Oh, and what LS is comparable ? Last edited by Half-Inch Stud; 05-01-2022 at 09:27 AM. |

Depends on the year. 2020 they replaced the V10 with the 7.3L pushrod V8.

The quote is from Mark's request for information on the V10 engines, nothing more. I have a wrecker that I built from a U Haul cab and chassis, that I bought from U Haul about 12 years ago when they were liquidating their 7.3 IH IDI diesel trucks. So they sell off their old trucks as they update their fleet. Usually the straight medium duty trucks are sold off as they approach 200,000 miles. Mine was about 210,000 miles on it when I bought it. |

We have three 550's with the V-10 gas engine, 2013, 2017 & 2018.
They run well, get about 7-8 mpg. They don't have the power of the 8.1 Chevy's they replaced. The 2013 dropped a valve at 130k and got a new engine, the other two running fine with about 90 k on the clock now |

Okay, thanks all. Just seemed to me the engine has peculiar performance (really bad mpg yet hauls heavy loads) for its small CID size.

As far as answering your other question for a comparable LS and related to utility trucks.
The UPS brown box trucks were at one time (and I think still are) using the 6.0 LS engines. I don't know what the normal UPS truck is rated at as far as payload but you don't need a CDL to drive one so the payload must not exceed 26,000 lbs. and the trailer they sometimes pull behind it can't exceed 10,000 lbs. That's a lot of work for the little 6.0 I'm sure the gas mileage is horrible. Especially since everyone you see leaving the house is about WOT all the time LOL. My dad's 6.0 3/4 ton truck drops to 7-8 mpg when pulling a fully loaded car trailer and that's trying to drive it easy. |

I have a 2006 F-350 SRW 4WD with the 6.8L V-10 that just turned 200k miles. Mine is 6 speed manual trans with 4.10 gears.
Unloaded freeway cruising it will get close to 12mpg. However, load it up with a trailer and it really loves to suck the gas. The engine needs RPM to make power. Not much in the low end torque department that would be expected in a truck motor. I pull an 24' X 8-1/2' enclosed car trailer weighing about 9000 lbs loaded. I drive I-70 over the rocky mountains. It will make the power to climb the hills without being that slow guy, but I wind the piss out of it to do that. Up hill or with a head wind I think I get down to around 4MPG. |
