TKX conversion
Ok, so I realized that I'm going to do this eventually, and with the new motor going in this seems like the best time to do it.
There are several vendors. Who is best, who to avoid, are they all about the same? What are the bare minimum parts required? Thanks.

As far as suppliers, I got mine from Holley. But there is shortages all over so you should check carefully.

I would say everyone's about the same...I got mine from APT. A complete kit is probably the easiest, but see whose kit you like the best. There are a lot of crossmembers I would not use.

From a previous thread, it seems like the only things I need are the Transmission, Shifter, clutch disc, speedo cable and driveshaft. Is that right? What about the mount? Also it seemed like maybe the stock crossmember can be used but may need mods?

I actually bought a Xmember as im lazy.Your speedo cable will attach to the adapter in the trans as I remember. You will need a trans yoke and just have your shaft shorten and yoke put on.If you have a 10 spline disk you will need a 26.If me,I believe you replace a pilot and throwout bearing whenever you SEE them.Tom

I just purchased the Transmission and Kit from APT.
It is going in a 1964 GP. The Kit is for the 64-67 A Body I had a Super T10 in the car with 65 and up bellhousing, Z-Bar, later crossmember and mount. Curious to see how much will need to be modified other than shortening the driveshaft. |

The magnum 6 speed is also an option but is more expensive. I have TKX and Magnum quotes from 3 vendors for complete kits ranging from $5400-$8000. If you reuse your original pedals and use manual linkage (not using hydraulic set-ups they push) it can be done for about $5000 all in. Once I finish a few other updates a TKX or Magnum is next on my list for my TA. Edit: I will say I don’t like the crossmember from American Powertrain. I don’t see how a bolt together unit could be anywhere near as strong as a welded piece. But that’s just me

I just put a TKX in my 72 Lemans. I bought most of the stuff from APT.

I started taking a closer look at the gearing for the TKX and I don't think it will help me very much with my current 3.31 gear. Seems like the goal should be lower gearing in 1-3 then a good OD ratio. The close ratio gives me a little better 1st, same in 2nd, worse in 3rd and the OD puts me at 2.25 or 2.68. The wide ratio is better in 1st and 2nd, worse in 3rd with OD at 2.38. They recommend a 3.73 rear gear and I can see why. I'm not really interested in changing my rear gear (again...). Seems like the M22Z would be a better choice if I keep the 3.31 gear. I know it's not as strong as the TKX and I give up the OD, but I'm a backroad cruiser with a 3.31 so I don't think I'll miss the OD, and I'd have a nice improvement in 1st and 2nd gear.
TKX: Wide Ratio – 3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00, 0.72 Close Ratio – 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.68 OR 0.81 M22Z: 2.98, 2 .04, 1.46, 1 M20: 2.52, 1.88, 1.46, 1

I had a M22 with 3.36 gears. I drive my car on the highway. With the M22 it would turn 3000 rpm at 60 mph. The TKX at 70 mph on turns 1900 rpm.

American Powertrain or Silver Sport are the top 2 vendors. American Powertrain I bought from due to lower shipping costs and no tax.

Silver Sport "Machines" the TKX tail housing and then uses their proprietary shifter. Leaving no options in case of shifter failure except buying their shifter as long as they are in business. Both companies are great to deal with. I have had a trans from both and I have visited both in person.

Wow! 3000 rpm at 60 mph is what my car did when it had 4.33 gears. What size tire is that with? And your at 1900 @70mph in the same car and same tire?

I agree.....something's not right unless he's running super short tires. All the GTO's I've had and have driven with a 3.36 gear and stock height tires ran 70 mph at about 3000 rpm. 3,000 at 60 is more like a 3.55-3.90 number.

I searched and found a thread where Caster1 blew up a M20 and was considering the M23Z. Is there more to the story??? The suspense is killing me!

Blew up an M23Z. Just street tires. Jody’s transmission made it right and sent higher strength gears for a rebuild, it’s holding up so far.
