So latest update. I take my crank and the bearings to the shop who originally did the bottom end. Told him, and showed him that the counterweights will have to be shaved down too. The crank was made with 455 journals, but 400 thrust spacing. So the crank will have to be balanced after counterweight shaving. He tells me, nope It will all be good. Don't worry. So fast fwd 2 wks later, to today. He calls me and is like Ummm Your bearings are wrong. They won't fit the counterweights. YEAH, I TOLD you that. They are the right bearings for 455. Crank was made wrong and you should have sent it back the first time you did it instead of grinding my thrust bearings to steel. Now you gona have to re balance it too, Like I said the first damn time..... I am just pissed and need to vent. It's like no one these days can do their job's right. Even in my career. Drywallers and painters always taking shortcuts, and messing up my electrical costing me hours and costing the client even more money. Just fed up

That is frustrating and happens too often nowadays. We need to make "made in America" mean something, like it has in the past.

If you wouldn't sign your name to your work, then you have no business doing the work.

If a mod like this is done thru the number 4 main web and both of the faces of the thrust bearing then there is 100% no problem with running a bearing cut down as the OP pulled out of his motor.

Ya, while that would probably work fine in lubricating steel on steel thrust. When I paid for a properly built 455 bottom end and forged crank, I want a PROPERLY built one. Not one that I will have to grind any future thrust bearings down to fit a mis manufactured crank.

I’ve never seen a crank where they were, even on fully counter weighted cranks. You notice things like that when you grind cranks for a living like I did.

Excellent point, Steve. This is the same mod folks used for years before the forged 3” main 4.00. 4.21 stroke cranks became available.

Why do we keep leaving the needed oil film out of what we are talking about here?
It should never be steel on steel or steel on Babbitt or steel on Aluminum or Aluminum on cast iron.
