Default Kick panels removed for speakers

Car is a 67 FB, originally an ac car but now with aftermarket air that no longer uses the original cowl vent and recirc paths.

First of all, removing the drivers kick panel is ridiculous. I thought my biggest obstacle was the one screw behind the e brake pedal that needed an angled screwdriver. I finally got that out and found out that I had to pull off the entire e brake pedal assembly to get the kick panel off. This was due to a big vent cone insert on the kick panel inside. See pic.

My question: I will be cutting my kick panels for some speakers. I am poised to hack off that big inner extension cone on the inside unless maybe someone can tell me there is a need to keep this big obstruction to install/removal. Opinions/thoughts?

Thanks!

I answered my own question when I chopped off all but about an inch or so of the extension. It had all of the sticky clay sealing stuff still on it, so that will help it seal. I'll have to see if I get some sort of air flow leakage from the cowl and correct later as needed.

It was STILL a PITA working with this thing, even with the extension trimmed and the ebrake pedal removed. I still have the extension/vent flapper on the passenger side. I had a little more work space there, and didn't have to hack it. I won't be installing the bulbous vent cover, tho, since it will hit my eva/heater box.

6.5" Pioneer speakers are now mounted, and I am blasting 80's hair metal with reckless abandon!

80's hair metal in a 67, really? I believe good 'ol rock-n-roll would be more appropriate.

Absolutely agree!!! Listen to the same in mine as well. I liked the 70s rock when I was a kid in the 70s. Still liked it listening to it all through the 80s. Listened sometimes during the 90s. Now I can't stand it other than a few select songs. 80s hard rock never gets old. Wasn't called "Hair Bands" back then though. Just heavy metal.

I was thinking I saw over on the protouring site someone was making plastic bucket inserts that could be screwed into the cavity and the speakers screwed into the bucket.

You were able to cut out the flapper piece and put your kick panel back on. Keeping a stock look.

Old headbangers are like refined wine.

I was watching this vid, remembering the days of tanking up some 101 leaded SuperFuel, winding the timing up like a clock, and hitting Forest Avenue in north Dallas. The full blown dragsters would say, “Not bad for a stocker. By the way, that system doesn’t thump. It explodes!”

This one was a creative shoe horn, often referred to as my 1988 mistake.

That was the days when I had a little girl just a little older than the new owner. “Dad! You better give it more gas! He’s passing you!”

Your kid pics are cool. My 12 year old son wanted to know if he can ride shotgun tomorrow at Pontiac Heaven when I race. As much as I SOOOOO want him with me, I have to be sensible. I've never had this car over 65-ish (first time racing this car), and can't take a chance that something would happen after various amounts of suspension work. He'll have to watch from the stands.

I let my daughter drive the FB a few months back (22 yrs). It was loud and obnoxious, and she loved it. My wife got jealous that she hasn't driven it yet. She enjoys riding in it, except for the occasional spider that makes my car its home. As long as I keep The Scorpions playing, she is grooving.

The Tesla vid was way cool. In fact, the cd in my bird as we speak is Tesla. Saw them once in 89 with Great White. Tesla is a band that unfortunately had the music scene evaporate from underneath them and everyone went to grunge just as they were really coming into their own and peaking. A vastly underrated band, IMHO.

Thread revival time!

When cutting holes for speakers in kick-panels, any tips in making sure hole is placed correctly? Also, do the speakers get mounted underneath the kick-panel so the only thing on surface of the panel are the speaker grids?

I don't know if cutting them will allow air in when you don't want it to or not? If you can still work the door you may be alright, never thought about cutting them off!

Thanks - this is an AC car so doesn't have the levers to open doors and aftermarket AC does away with the air intake from p-side. The hole for factory speakers is closer to the car door in a recess in body structure.
