Default 427 big block

A guy at my bowling league tells me his buddy has a 67 Chevelle SS that came stock with a 427. Not a Yenko, Nickey, Dick Harrel, Motion or COPO. I call BS. He googles it on his phone and says "Look it says here they sold 80,xxx 69 427 Chevelles". Again I call BS. Did a 427 ever come in any Chevelle other than from one of those "special" dealers?

I think "396" 375hp was the best you could do. Always like the '66 better.

Pretty much the Only time Chevy broke the rule on 1 hp per Cu-in was the 430 HP 427 ZL-1 in 1969.
That said, it was extremely limited production and NOT found in a Chevelle.
Many dealers bought and sold 427 Long Blocks though...
In '67 it was a Vette only deal.
Back in '65 They made Big Block Vettes with.. um, yeah.... Powerglides. <, Tell that one at Bowling night! ( Its true!)

Original poster asked "Did a 427 ever come in any Chevelle other than from one of those "special" dealers? " According to " The Guide to GM Musclecars", in 1969 a Chevelle could be ordered thru COPO 9561 ( L72) with a 427 rated at 425 HP. On a side note, in 67, 68 and 69 one could have a Corvette with a 427( L71) with iron heads at 435 HP or an aluminum head 427( L 89) also rated at 435 HP or the 427 ( L 88) rated at 430 HP.

So i thought 67 Chevelles were 350 and 396. I recall that 66-68 396s split blocks up the middle with Street use.
Corvette and some Big Cars, and trucks got variants of a 427.

Yet also thought the 69 Chevelle SS and Camaro got a 427 variant, but the Yenko and other specialty offers mess with the facts. I admit not looking at Chevys much at all. Interiors were a step-down, and exteriors often broke style points.

West Coast...aware of the COPO's...my point was 427 in a Chevelle was NOT an RPO...forgot about the Ultra rare ZL1 69 Camaro.

So no 427 in 1967 unless you had a vette.

He would have had a better chance of winning the argument if he hadn't said there were 80,000 427 Chevelles built.

grandam79...yes
Stuart...I doubt there were 80,000+ 427 engines installed in ALL cars... Big Chevy's,(Biscayne, Impala and wagons). Corvette's and the various "special dealers" like Nickey, Berger, Dana, Dick Harrell, Yenko, Motion, ZL1's and COPO's. I wonder if they even built 80,000+ 427's?

The 427 Chevelle/Camaro COPO was in 1969. Gibb Chevrolet was the first to figure out to use the COPO system to get factory cars.
Prior to that it would have to be a dealer or private owner conversion.

Side note - they did not even build 80K SS396 Chevelle's in 1967 and although not mandatory, would expect a conversion dealership would start with a one to begin with.

427 Chevelle was a common mod back then. BIL had one. I love Poncho's, but that car was fast.

I bought a few old car magazines at a swap meet a few years back. In one of the magazines there was a 1967 newspaper clipping from Timmers Chevrolet dealership in Atlanta. The add stated you could buy a new 1967 396 SS Chevelle and for $1250 you could have a Genuine GM 427 installed. I am not sure if I still have it but thought it was kind of neat to see that in print.

My cousin bought a new SS427/4 speed Impala in 1967, I think it was probably the 385hp version. It was Marina Blue, just like the one in the factory brochure - it was a great looking car.

Please re read the OP post you "Partially" quoted...
He said this " Not a Yenko, Nickey, Dick Harrel, Motion or COPO. "
He meant a Production ( RPO) 427 in Chevelles...
Didnt happen...

Maybe, a better question should be "Are there 1970 MORE LS-6 Chevelles Now than in 1970 " ???

Not as rare as my ex-mother in law's 67 GTO that she ordered new with a Hemi in it. No matter what I tried to tell her I was always wrong on this.
