Flywheels
I am looking to buy a new flywheel. Has anyone used the "RAM" flywheel.?
It seems to be reasonably priced. This is for My 65 GTO with 66 389 block. Car is not raced, but I do like to drive it hard sometimes.. When I had it out last and turned down (12 years ago). The guy recommended a New one next time. It's been surfaced now four times. 3 times with previous owners. Thanks, Dave |

Just be sure it is either external balance like a factory one or neutral balanced if your motor is internal balanced.

I have one. Very nice quality. Includes the bolt on weight if you need it.

I have used 4-5 Ram brand flywheels over the last year or so on customer's engines I've built. Never had any issues with them. The fit and finish was great.

I would just make sure you get one that's SFI rated for safety margin.

We use and sell a lot of the PRW flywheels. They are SFI certified, work with both Pontiac's 65-79 flywheel registers, neutral or factory offset balance and 10.5 & 11" clutches. They also cost less than any other "quality" flywheel we know of. I did just order a RAM for a customer's project and it seem nice.

Thanks guys.
I do not know if my engine was internally balanced. The flywheel that I am taking off soon was zero balanced. What effect would happen if my engine was externally balanced when it was built in 1996 before I owned it(2003). Thanks |

If the old flywheel was zero balanced, replace it with the same. |

Dave,
Came that way when you bought the car? Or machine shop did it when you had it resurfaced? Ever had unexplained vibrations with this car? I'd be doing a bolt-on weight flywheel just in case. Then you can add or take away if it has the tremors Clay |

Clay,
First time I took off when doing a new clutch kit. I had a machine shop surface it and check the balance. He said the balance was very close and did nothing to it. He did say the flywheel was looking tired and should not put to many more miles on it. Said OK to use it ,but not to turn down anymore. It is a hays 13-130 If I remember correctly. My car does vibrate some at/in the tranny some , mostly at high RPM's (over 4500). Thanks, Dave |

We just used the Ram 1557 flywheel on a W72 based 467 Stroker in a 4-Speed 1979 Trans Am. Not even one problem with it at all, super nice flywheel. We did however use the Powermaster XS 9550 starter due to header clearance with the big factory starter.
