Who knows diesel trucks and current values?
I know very little about the diesel truck market. Aside from the 12v is the equivalent of an SBC and that diesels are hot right now. Especially around here.
I’m considering selling my 1964 4 speed Galaxie. Just time to move on to something else. I value it between 16-18k. Nice solid driver. Dude today offered me a straight trade for a 1996 Ram 2500 with 154k on it. Automatic. I initially said I wasn’t interested but it’s a super clean truck for the Midwest. Old guy owned, no rust. Some small tuner upgrades but not beat on. He said he only has a few hundred miles on it since the diesel shop had it. Injectors, pump, that sort of thing. And those ugly wheels that all the kids like on trucks right now. No dash cracks. Ac and everything works. To be fair is still have no interest in the truck, but might do the trade because I think the truck might be easier to sell. Lots of tire kickers when selling hot rods. I also think I might come out just slightly on top with the trade. I think there is a chance the truck might being 19-20k. It’s so hard to find them not beat up it’s kinda hard to price check in the current market. My truck expert buddy said it would be the holy grail if it were a stick, but being an automatic standard cab the floor is probably 16k. I’m looking to get into a c3 or maybe a 99-2009 Porsche 911 Anybody on here?

The ultimate dodge everyone wants is the Cummins 4 by 4 4 door. A stick shift being the unicorn. Now that being a two wheel drive non extended cab makes it worth a lot less. Still a killer truck.

I’d say 12 grand tops.

In the Northwest, the 2wd would be a deal breaker unless someone wanted it for racing.....and then again a lot of those guys seem to be running 4x4 for better launches off the line at the track.
Looks like a nice truck, but I agree, 2wd and standard cab is not very desirable. Around here 12-15 would probably be about right. My son just bought a 2000 24v Cummins, auto, 4x4 extended cab with 250k miles for 12k. |

Diesel prices are through the roof for sure but I'd also say 12k or so. I bought my first diesel earlier this year and paid almost 30k for it, 2015, 4wd, crew cab, black leather etc...fully loaded. Just for comparison

Prior to the mods, this is a $7500 private party value truck per KBB.com

He said it was a 4x4. I know it doesn’t have badging on it. I was planning on looking under it if I go see it.
I just noticed everyone pricing it as a 2wd. At this point I’m assuming it’s a 4x4 since the dude said it was. Easily verified by the presence of a front differential. Ultimately whether he wants my car is the most important part. He is supposed to be calling his 64 expert who owns several of them. That guy probably paid 2500 for all of his 20 years ago. So Im always leery of said valuations. If he wants my car I ultimately may tell him to just sell his truck first and then buy mine. Mine isnt even really on the open market, I made one feeler post. I havent exactly tried hard to sell it. Selling old cars is just tiresome. So many tire kickers. Everyone always thinks there is some hidden thing the seller is holding back that ruins the car. I thought the truck might be more straight forward and easy to sell. Also area specific, there is a big diesel performance company (Wagler Performance) in the area, that I think pumps up interest and prices locally. There are tons of them around here with stickers in their back windows. Personally I loathe diesel performance, but that is an entirely different argument.

No such thing as a rust free Dodge. They just rust from the inside instead of the outside.

Those era dodge trucks are starting to get a little attention. Finding one without rust is a unicorn. Even with 4 wd I would say 12k-16k tops. Those cummins are good for 500k miles easily. I would think for the asking price of your car you are looking at an even swap, and yes it may be easier to sell the truck than the car. I dont think youre going to make a lot of money on the deal though. As far as 4 doors, I dont remember seeing a lot of them in that body style, lots of crew cabs though.

Im asking 18 for mine, really Im hoping for 17k. So if I culd have sold the truck for 18k I would be fine with that. Its so damned hard to find them not being rust buckets here in Indiana I thought it might sell fast. In my little bit of research Ive seen quite a few extended cabs, but I havent seen any true crew cabs for sale. Not that they dont exist, but they certainly arent common.

Just my opinion, but I believe the 4 door or quad cabs are way more desireable in todays market. Not saying a regular cab wont sell, but most buyers looking for a little more people/storage room.

Diesel truck prices have always been high, but lately they've gone into the stratosphere.
12V Cummins are great trucks with a huge following. I know every region has different pricing scales, but up here clapped out 12Vs go for good money. It's not uncommon to see trucks needing fenders, rockers, cab corners, and lower doors selling for 6-8k. The truck you're looking at looks like it's in amazing shape from the pics. While it's true that a crew cab manual is king of the 2nd gen Rams, a clean regular cab 4x4 is still worth a pretty penny. Up here that truck could sell for 16-18k if you held out for the right buyer. It might take a little while to find that guy though. Me personally, I dont like trades. If I want to get rid of a vehicle, I want cash, that way I can shop around and buy what I want. If I still have to sell what I traded for, I'm no better off than I was before the trade.

Locally, the above single cab long wide 4x4 would quickly sell in the mid teens. With 2" less lift & 2018 factory style 18" wheels/tires... good chance more. The Ram noted above has a '98-01 dash in it, I would want to know more if the truck is truly a '96 model. That clean, & if it was a club cab or quad cab 4x4 model, would most likely able to pull near 20K. For durability, many of us prefer the 12V Cummins NP 5 spd combo. Last of the factory 12V's were built as early '98 models. There are several that specialize in buying & selling clean late 2nd Gen Cummins. One fellow I follow is out of MO. In that realm, & with the large spike in truck prices in the last 16 months, it has not been uncommon to see numerous of the most desirable clean late 2nd Gen 2500 4x4 models sell in the mid to high 20K range. These have been relatively stock appearance lower mile trucks, not hotrod builds with big bodylifts & goofy offset tire/wheel combos. For my own use, I prefer the 2wd model it's 2-3 better mpg /have no need to play in the mud. End of last Feb is the first time in 20 years that a mess of a winter storm caused issues in my area & that my truck was parked. Not a good price comparison, but up the road from me in Aug, my friend Al locally advertised his 2001 24V auto Quad cab dually. Local dealerships were sending out reps & lowballing him. Flawless leather interior, very clean, 93K miles, recently mounted new Goodyears. Needed a dryer & AC recharge & as result he knocked down the price some. Sold for 21.5K. TX buyer planned a few slight mods & to hotshot with it.

16-18K sounds close to correct value to me also. 2 years ago it was a 12K truck. Clean low milage pickups diesels are pretty sought after, now more now than ever. I would not be surprised to see if sell for over 20K next year from inflation and demand.
We paid $6500 for our 1997 extended cab diesel 5 speed dually back in 2005 from a Dodge dealer. Prices have went nuts. Well over 350K miles on it now, present day photo, couldn’t begin to replace it for 6500. Usually some risk jockeying cars and truck on trade though in hopes to sell the next…Some people will look at the truck they will and still only want to pay 12 k for it…I watched a 2013 4 door 4x4 diesel dodge with about the same miles sell for 26k on an online auction. My guess is the price was soft from the deleted egr equipment. About the same time a regular cab dodge 92 diesel 4x4 brought 35k on an auction with some chassis mods and 44” tires. Need to know what your looking at….Good luck Last edited by Jay S; 11-22-2021 at 12:33 PM. |

This truck with the flatbed sold last week (Nov 10) on Big Iron Auctions and had well 212,000 miles, cummins 5 speed extended cab work truck. Just last may this other 2001 sold for 9800 with only 120k miles. What a difference 6 months makes!

[QUOTE=RocktimusPryme;6296830]To solve the cracked plastic dash shell issue, one can order a new textured dash shell from LMC or other national vendors for under $300. This replaces the entire upper structure. My original dash top made it 18 years til it finally cracked. Parked indoors it would have lasted even longer. The task to swap to a late 2nd Gen dash in a '94-97 is much more involved than just replacing the upper shell. Imo, the later 2nd Gen dash has much better appearance & functionality. With all the mods that guys do to 2nd Gens, there have even been a few 3rd Gen dash into 2nd Gen deals... TON of work.

Typ, the newer the generation of full size pickup, the more versions of the beds were used. It's become down right ridiculous w all the different versions. On trucks like later model alum body F150's, if sideswiped down a bed side, it's typical not a replace the bedside deal. Instead a new bed from Ford is typ the solution. 2 years ago that was a $2400 part, have noticed several being replaced.

You may be undervaluing your '64 4 speed Galaxie have you looked at what they are going for? What color, engine, etc. is your car? Pictures?
