"History of the Pontiac V 8 Engine 1955-79"
"History of the Pontiac V 8 Engine 1955-79"
In Feb. 1957 317 HP (3) 2-bbl & (2) 4-bbl Pontiac Powered Vehicles cleared the sands at Daytona Beach in Florida. Pontiac Engineering released a new "Race Engine package" using a Pontiac Hydraulic Lifter Cam # 524886 number "6" (MY CAM) and Isky Solid Lifter Cam # 524772, not available on Production cars. They were either purchased over the counter, dealer installed or personally installed by the owner. This policy continued through 1962 after which professional Racing required that "Factory only" Engines could be raced. The Photo with the Badge of 428 ci claims it to be greater than one HP per Cube. Read the text please. My Engine has a spoken History and although it can't be proven by me does not diminish the possibility that it happened. The person that ran Moonshine in the Truck that went over the side of a cliff is that History, period. Whoever that person was, he knew from past experience, what he was building when installing the Pontiac Hydraulic Lifter Cam # 524886 number "6" into a newer 428 ci HO Tri-Power Engine. Since it is used from 1957-62 and then installed into later 1967 YK code 428 HO is not coincidental. I now say this guy was a race car driver at least to use a Race Cam and Tri-Power on my Motor. The average person would not think of it. The Motor did not come with the Tri-Power Cam on the assembly line and here is that Fact now confirmed. The upside-down # (2288) stamping is from the Mechanic that did the new installation of the special RACE PARTS. It would be great if I could find out more, not that I gave up but each day on line brings me closer to the truth. I am patient and will simply wait for the mystery to unfold as it has been doing. That mystery for new comers is: "weather a Moonshiner that used this Motor in the truck that went over a Cliff was a somebody. Unfortunately, as it was said on this Forum, people that old are dead. So, I have to live with that. At least I unraveled the code and numbers on my Block to my satisfaction. Now, I will move on and continue to post interesting Photos and Articles stored on my computer for the Forum here on the post. To the person that said the "YK" 428 ci is a Manual code I think you should look at the list I provided so you can add an addendum for the book you own. The Badge above in the Photo I provided shows a 428 ci Engine Stock with more than one inch per cube. 428 HO B body cars .txt Above has Tri-power Info. from this Forum but not all of it just the 1966 parts that pertains to my needs Plus more I added. Mike sees :1962 Pontiac Motor Trend Article, the 421 ci at the Clutch produces 465 HP @ 5300 rpm and 510 lb/ft Torque @ 3500. This is a non-SD. Why won't the 428 ci provide these #'s and better? Given the same Carbs. Exhaust and Cam. Put a Dual 4bbl system on my 428 ci HO and I bet I would be the same as the 421 ci and maybe better for the additional displacement.

Mike sees: The Pontiac 350 ci Motor has cold air induction through the Passenger side Hood. You see this through the Cowl on a Z 28. Pontiac had (4) two through the head light area and (2) on the Hood. One more on the Driver's side instead of the Tach. I have more Photos of this evolution of Air Induction. I can't say whether it was on an option list or it was developmental.

And if we go by this rational my 400 is pushing 450hp, which it is not, and was driven by John Delorean. Just try to prove otherwise... |

The 421 ci in the Tempest Station Wagon is a rare Vehicle. Hard to believe anyone would want that much power in that type of vehicle. Look at that Intake Manifold under those Quads.

That’s a 421SD. One of six wagons made just for drag racing in 1963. That’s the “bathtub” intake manifold.
