That's how they were. Since the '70's, everybody has the rear end raised up, and those who were not around in the '60's think that the raised ride height is original, when it's not. These cars were very low originally, which makes them look longer, IMO. I kind of like the raised look, personally.

i'll see if i can find an old pic of the cougar taillights, but be prepared to HURL, they stuck out over the top of the bumper. i had to replace the rear fascia panel, it was hacked to install the cougar lights. one other odd thing that i could never get a straight answer about is i have 4 reverse lights in the bumper. (see pic) Dad told me a few years ago that it came like that, but he was 90 yrs old then so he prob. forgot that modification(lost him last year). The cast aluminum side pipes burned quite a few legs. my car also has a 67 dual-gate and console. i still have the original 66 console and shifter.
just a note in my evolving defense, this is an ongoing project. i have a few closets full of interior and exterior replacement pieces and parts to install, before repaint + an engine being assembled with EFI (i'm not a purist either, sorry). i like to retain the flavor of the era like 5 spoke mags only, kinda like half restified. rewired the whole car last winter....that was fun.

A few before and after pictures of the trunk lid.
Wet sanded with 2500 to knock down all of the cracks and high spots in the original lacquer paint. Then compounded and buffed with 3M three step polishing system. I started with the Dutchman panel and you can see the color change between the Dutchman panel and the trunk lid. Then after taping off the factory pinstripe I started on the top of the drivers quarter panel. Thanks Pat |

Thank you sir! I’m very happy with the way it is polishing out. Just doing one panel of the time is very therapeutic;-)

After having a 50+ year old crease from a parking lot mishap removed by a paint-less dent remove, I wet sanded the drivers quarter panel with 2500, then compound, buffed, and polish it. This 55 year old lacquer paint is starting to look very respectable. Only 7 more panels to go;-)
Thanks Pat |

Are those original rallye I? or 15".
Wheelwells look very "full" for a 14" redline! |

Original 14” rally 1. Note the 225/70 red line tire are taller.

Remarkable improvement in the clarity of the reflection when looking at the before and after photos where the quarter emblem is located. In addition to removing all the "dead" paint & oxidation, the wet sanding really leveled out the orange peel.

That car is drop-dead gorgeous in and out. Nice work. Unbeatable color combo, IMO.
