Pontiac Swap in a 62 GMC
Hey guys, not sure where to put this but I will be putting either a 389 or 400 in my 62 GMC Pu. It is sitting on an 86 c10 chassis and I am looking for others that have done this.
Any insight into issues and what parts were used like motor mounts and exhaust would be appreciated. Thanks

I know of 2 people that put 455's in Mid to late 80's Suburbans so it can be done. I will ask them what issues they ran into.

I was Told the only issue were normal, trans adapter plate to retain the original Chevy bolt pattern transmission, and adapt the battery and wiring due to the starter being on the other side. Other than that he said he used the late 70's Pontiac style Captured motor mounts and just drilled the needed holes in the X-member. The only other issue he could remember was getting shorter A/C lines as the A/C compressor is now on the passenger side if you use Pontiac Belts & Pulleys. Also the Coolant hoses & connectors were a bit of a challenge.
He said he originally did the conversion on a 84 1 ton dually, then when he scrapped the truck he liked the torque of the 455 so much he put it in the 69 Suburban that I remember. I forgot it was a 69.

Thanks for the insight Jeff. I appreciate it. I had read the headers could be fun but think I’ll go with Ram Air manifolds.
Thanks again!

I put a 400 in my 67 GMC with a 400 Turbo
Started as a low budget 60k mi. engine and a quick fun project Used the frame mounts from a 73 -87 chevy truck with the clamshells and the engine mounts from a 75 Catalina. I used exhaust manifolds that exit in the rear This is how it sits now, I had to pull it back out and rebuild the engine because it smoked ,flat cam etc. Just got it tagged and insured, waiting for the seat to come back from the upholstery shop Good Luck |
