Has no idea there was such a thing. Would make a great sleeper with a Pontiac V-8 between the frame rails.

That is pretty amazing with a diesel engine in it.
I am leaning way towards it being a conversion. VW didn't start sending diesels to the USA until about 1977 iirc Not at all familiar with toyota diesel engines and can't tell for sure if that engine is turbo-charged or not. but appears it is not |

Looks like their L series engine, probably a 2L. Also appears to be non turbo. At least it'll be reliable and get a minimum of 40+ MPG but will be painfully slow for those accustomed to modern gas engines and instant acceleration of the past 30+ years.

It has to be a conversion by someone, although it looks like it was done very well.
The Pontiac T1000 was available with a diesel engine but it was sourced from Isuzu. |

Ad not available until the 1980's I beleive. This is a unique conversion. Would not be fast but should get 30+ MPG

A good friend of mine had a diesel Ford Escort. Sounds like it was a pile, it it ran and drove great!!! 50 MPG, was a Mazda Diesel engine. When ever we talk about that car, I always tell him, he should have kept it!!!

The engine compartment of the H-Body (it was H until that was later reused on the Bonneville/Lesabre/etc FWD cars) was designed to accommodate a rotary engine whose program and partnership never materialized. The 4cyl (2300s) were easy to work on, which was handy because they were unreliable. The v6 cars werent bad, but the pre 77 cars were odd fire without the split crankpin and shook like a dog crapping peach pits. Those SBC versions were a nightmare to work on, and obviously the inspiration of the 82-92 Fbody engine compartment - I think the only change for the F-body was to add more sharp edges to tear your hands up on.

A college friend had a diesel Chevette his parents bought him. It got around 50mpg. I don't know where Chevy sourced the engine. It was noisy.
I had a diesel Rabbit pickup. I ran out of fuel twice because I forgot to put in fuel because I had a short drive to work and a tank lasted me weeks at a time. |
