Default Starting car with trickle charger attached harmful?

Can starting a car with a trickle charger on cause an issue with the electrical system or the EFI?

It can be harmful to your trickle charger once the motor starts and now there’s 14 plus volts trying to back flow into it!!

I would say that it depends. If it's a "smart" charger you're probably ok. If it's a transformer and some switches, you could burn it up.

Not quite sorry to say!
Most Trickle chargers to this day use the Texas Instruments LM317T adjustable regulator to keep a constant 12 volts on the battery and they have no protection against being driven in reverse in a over voltage mode!

Please explain your thinking as to why a older type charger with a transformer and switches would burn up?

Hook one up and try it. I've forgotten to disconnect one before I tried to start the car. Pegs the meter and gets blazing hot quick!

A trickle charger wont offer up much power for cranking anyways,

If your low on battery its wise to trickle a couple days get a full battery then disconnect and start engine and let charging circuit handle it from there weather or not any damage could happen

My current charger (No pun intended) is 2/10/50amp. Fits all situations pretty much.

my experience is that it is not so much the starting, but the driving off with the trickle charger still attached, is where the problems seem to arise ...

I assume at this point, everyone that's ever been to a dragstrip has seen the car headed to the lanes with the charger bouncing along the pavement behind it, protesting heavily!

Just to be clear here, my comment on the regular IC Chip used and how it can be harmed is not in regards to a lunch box type of transformer driven charger that typically has only a high and low current setting .
