WIX 51258 Oil Filter
Getting ready for Norwalk today and changing oil in my 64 goat and noticed my filters bottom was blow down. 462 @ 748hp, can anyone recommend a cure? 20/50 Penn Grade oil. Oil pressure is 80-100psi at cold start so I use a heating pad on the oil pan to preheat the oil.

Aluminum Rod Engine which is why I’m 20/50. Yes, I know all about Pontiac’s needing only 10psi per 1000 rpm, but this is what I’m dealing with. Is a alternative filter an option, perhaps a WIX race filter?

Use the K&P, best filter out there. Wix quality has went down hill recently. Had one on my Duramax come apart on the inside and clog the inlet and a friend had one on a Buick drag car come apart on the inside and lose oil pressure.

How about the Fram HP race series filter? Extra heavy case, and has an internal bypass valve, which is covered by a mesh screen over the bypass to keep the big chunks out...

If interested System-1 makes a "Spin On" Billet oil filter with a 35 micron screen.
https://system1filters.com/product-c...y/oil-filters/ Most WIX Racing filters have a 28 GPM flow rate and 61 Nominal Micron Rating https://www.wixfilters.com/Speciality/Racing.aspx?1 .

I'm using HR2 10w30 in a similar build (462, 700hp?, 100psi on initial fire). Same filter and I may be experiencing the same issue. Can't really tell the filter changed dimensions at all, but put a caliper on it, and it appears the filter grew a few ticks under 1/8th of an inch. About 300 miles on it. First oil change with any real use, so cant draw any conclusions yet. Will see how the others go. No bypass on my remote system, so its why Im being so careful here. Not sure it means I need a $175 oil filter yet, but that K+P S16 sure does look nice!!

You can buy a used systems one cast aluminum screen filter for around $100 or less on eBay.

The Wix racing filters are rated at 500 psi burst rate.. Check it out. https://www.wixfilters.com/Specialit...%20Catalog.pdf
I run Wix with no issues. 51069R racing filter. |

The System 1 will hold the pressure, and will flow better, at the expense of slightly less filtration.

I like the 51069s bigger diameter gasket. Not sure it will help - same GPH - but sure cant hurt.

Apologies - 51258 and 51069 have the same GPH, but 51258 and 51069R do NOT. Initially the Wix filter page didnt return a listing for the 51069R, so I thought it was the same as the regular 51069.

I've run ali rods in my Pontiacs with around 80-100 psi cold start pressures, I used to heat the oil pan with a small electric fan heater before I started the car after leaving it stand for a few weeks . I've always used Fram PH4825 oil filters ( no internal bypass valve - I want all my oil filtered, all of the time!), and never had a problem with them. I have used the Champion, Wix and Mann equivalents of this filter but prefer the Fram as it has more oil hole area in the top plate.

Adynes, the filter was cut apart and inspected by the builder and myself. The filters bottom grew about an 1/8” but everything looked fine inside. We are running this weekend at Nationals.
