Default Head identification

Doing some research on these heads. They were on a 400 but do not know for sure they came on it from the factory. The 400 was a mid 70 block. The heads have press in studs, they look to have the 1.96/1.66 valves. didnt measure them but definetly not 2.11 intake valve. The date code as I read that it indicates a April , 08, 1981. #15 on the center exhaust port.

thepontiacman is right. They were used on the 290 and 340 horse big car 400's. 10.5:1 advertised compression.

I have 2 sets of 1968 #15 small valve heads and both sets have the air injection passage running the lenght of the head above the Exh ports.

I think these may be the #15 small valve casting from 1970 which is also 87 CCs and pressed in studs.

1968 #15 heads may have AIR passage like earlier heads depending on if they are early 68 casting.
Later 68 heads look normal and don't have that. I probably have a set of the 68 #15 that are early casting. If I do, I will get a picture,
I have had #16 big valve heads that were cast like early heads. These were on a 68 YS 400.
Lots of mid year changes in 68.

Intakes changed casting number.

That "1" you're seeing at the end is same as the dash mark at the beginning.

Both from slots in the screws that held the date tag on the raw casting used to make molds.

I agree that those are 1968 castings;
The date code makes it air tight.
I have had a couple sets of 1968 #17 (small valve 350/2bbl heads);
One pair was casted for air injection, the other wasn't.

Those are probably great heads as-is;
It's my opinion that the pre-1971 small valve heads are often undervalued for what they are, they give you compression where later heads do not, and many might be surprised at how much power is gained from using them to replace a set of stock (oh let's say) 6X heads.
