Reproduction Gas Tank Sending Unit
Has anyone had an issue with the reproduction sending units? It seems that it does not register the correct amount of gas. Have checked the gauge and it is Ok. I know they are not made in the USA. Thoughts and advice. Thanks

I had the same issue with my SS sending unit from Auto City Classics. I had to bend the wire float arm down a bit to adjust the float level in the tank to read correctly. Mine read 3/4 of a tank when full on initial install. Other than that, I’ve had no other issues. I have a the reproduction 1966 tank and straps from ACC as well. |

Had the very same problem with the SS unit from Auto City on my '62 After installation of the sender & new tank added 7 gallons of fuel. Checked the gauge & it read almost empty! Ended up adjusting the float rod like "ben" & it now reads 3/4 full after fill-up & 1/4 full when 1/2 full. Called Auto City about the problem & of course they had no issues with that unit. Verified that the resistance is correct, 0 - 30 ohms. May just add a 5 ohm resistor to the gauge wire as readjusting the float arm is a rear pain even with a lift!

Rather than siphon out a full tank to drop my tank I also added some resistance in series with the sender. Still not great but at least at full it reads more than about 5/8 and then run on E for the last 10gallons.

I was just getting ready to start a post to ask about the best repro sending units for an A-body (70). I am assuming to stay away from Auto City, or is this par for the course?

The re-pros Auto City sells were made off my original 61 Bonneville unit. Of course I did not get it back as they took it apart to copy. I got two new ones as payment and have not tried them yet because the car is apart. If you have an original you might try making sure the float is shaped the same as the original and checking the oms for correctness before installing. also make sure the ground is solid. Let us know what works. Mike

I have the original sending unit. I cleaned it, tested it, and put on a new sock. I tested the gauge and it is good. I am thinking of changing back to original. The original goes up to 35 ohms. That could be a difference as well. Should I change it or just bend the arm as of the repro as suggested? It is an auto city unit and tank.

repro vs stock
If your original is working properly I would reuse it. But I would like to know what you find in differences between your original and the repro. oms? float drop and shape and any others. Thanks, Mike

Not only did mine read incorrectly, it leaked very badly at the gasket. Finally gave up and cleaned up the old one and put it back in.

Th original goes to 35 ohms. The reproduction only goes to 30. That could be a difference as well. Th original tests god. I am going to hook up the wires.to it and move the float up and down and see what the gas gauge does?

If the original is 0-35 ohms and the repro is 0- 30 ohms, you can't just fix the problem by adding a 5 ohm resistor. All that does is shift the problem from one end of the scale to the other making it a 5-35 ohm. You are either picking for it to be accurate at full, or accurate at empty. Personally, I'd rather it show 3/4 when it's full than it show 1/4 when it's empty. If zero ohms is empty, adding the 5 ohm resistor will make it read 1/6 tank when it's actually empty.

Going to put in original sending unit today. Think it is the best option. Cleaned it. new sock, tested with ohm meter and hooked up cars wires and works perfectly. We will see? Wish me luck
