Tri power with 200R4?
Anyone have a tri power setup with a 200R4 transmission? Wondering what types of options are available for the TV cable that wouldn’t look like a cobbled mess.

Buy an adapter plate and go with a 700r4. Much better tranny.

I prefer the 200R4. They could handle the torque of the Buick Grand Nationals where the 700s couldn't.

What torque? The hottest Grand National there was (the GNX) had 276 horse and 360 ft/lbs of torque. That is nothing and that is why it did not need much for a transmission. The 700r4 is basically a T350 with an overdrive. The internals are much beefier in the 700 than the 200. If the 200 was such a torque handling monster why wasn't it put in the Corvette or the trucks? Also, what torque the GN/GNX had did not come in at the hit of the throttle. Big difference on internals. Big difference on transmissions. Putting a 200 behind the torque a Pontiac engine delivers is a very foolish thing. |

Don't worry about the 200 4R holding up if it is built correctly, My son had one in this Turbo Regal turning 10's. I have had one in my 600hp GTO for 17 years. Both were built by BowTie Overdrives. They MUST be adjusted correctly though so getting that cable to move correctly is an absolute must.

Not exactly what you're asking, but for the HydroStick to the Tri-Power in my GMC I bought a generic cable (maybe i can find the receipt?) and fabbed my own brackets at both ends (I could take photos).

If you put $2500.00 - $3000.00 into a 200 it will hold up for awhile. One way to eliminate the need for a TV cable is to go with a vacuum modulated 4L60e. You will have all the reliability of a T350, an O.D. and no TV cable to deal with. Performabuilt builds them. |

If you're serious about building a 200R4 contact John Schramm near Toledo Ohio if you want one built correctly and reasonably. 419-666-2838. John can also teach you why the turbo 350 is a better transmission than the 400 if you want to learn from someone that actually knows about them. I've learned to trust the guys that produce and warrant what they build. John built a transmission for a friend mine for his 87 GNX that he and his son campaigned. TCI was their sponsor and he was tired of changing transmissions. John built one for him and it was in for years. He also warrantied it even when racing. It wasn't anywhere near $2000 to build.

I had a 200-4R behind a 462 for decade, worked very well. Regret selling the trans as the combo did high 13's in a 3,800 pound car while getting 17 mpg.Trans now resides in a 72 shortbox Chevy with 4.11's: owner is very happy. |

Been racing GM OD's well before anyone thought you could.
200's are lightweight boat anchors. The only people that think they work are GN people and the people that are stuck with their mistake. There is a reason why GM canned production of the 200 while a version of the original 700 is still in vehicles. But enlighten me and tell me why the 200 was never used in the Corvette? How about a truck? I'll wait for your "real world" answer. |

If GM thought the 200 was any good they would have designed a case to bolt it into a Corvette. However, GM was plagued with warranty claims due to poor metallurgy causing failure after failure that GM killed it off and cut their losses after a few short years. To say a 200 is a good transmission is to say the Cadillac Northstar or HT 4100 is a good engine. There is a good reason why GM puts that little blue button on the rear view mirror. It is so you can call a tow truck. |

Most GN guys like Pontiac guys are used to Chevy guys trying to tell us how they have the best parts and cars while they get their arses handed to them. It was even a joke at the GM proving grounds where the Buick engineers had license plate brackets made that said "We slow down for Corvettes". Too bad it was true and they spanked every Chevy built. I'm done.

Bringing this one back. I would be interested in seeing pictures of the 200R4 or TH350 TV cable on a tri-power.

Bill Konwall has one in a '65 GTO. He had a lot of trouble finding the right brackets, etc. to make it work. If you PM him, he can tell you what works.
