Nice car. I don't recall Jay having a vinyl top and I seem to recall a roll bar.

I'm not an expert on SD trans am prices, but that seems like a lot of car for the money?

but i agree- a survivor SD 455 TA for under 50 K. less than a thousand built in 74. Back then ordering and receiving one wasn't even an easy thing. Seems like a good price. |

I have to assume 1974 was the only year to offer the option. I am 54 and this is the 3rd vinyl top’d Trans Am I have ever seen. All of which were 1974 models. Two were white and then this Blue one.

The vinyl roof option was available on the second-gen Firebird beginning with the 1970 model year, but it was unavailable on the Trans Am because of the roof stripe. This was spelled out a few different times in Pontiac literature between 1970 and 1972.
Once the roof stripe went away in 1973, Pontiac began exploring it on the Trans Am too. The Sales department initiated a request on March 12, 1973 that C08 be offered on the Trans Am for the 1974 model year. Sales estimated that approximately 700 Trans Ams would be equipped with it. Since no new components were required and it wouldn't cost Pontiac anything additional, it was ultimately approved on March 20, 1973. While there's no breakdown as to how many of the 14,198 Firebirds equipped with the C08 Cordova Roof option during the 1974 model year were Trans Ams, we have to assume it was rather rare. And in addition to those mentioned above, I know of another '74 Trans Am that was Buccaneer Red with a black vinyl roof. I believe it was used in an older Year One ad where Herb Adams was standing next to it. Based on sales information for the 1975 model year, I can't find anything that says the vinyl roof option wasn't available on the Trans Am that year. That being the case, we can assume that it was, but I must admit that I hadn't ever seen one. The vinyl roof changed to a canopy style (half vinyl roof on front half only) and Pontiac sales literature for 1976 spells out its unavailability on the Trans Am for 1976. So from my estimation, the vinyl roof option was avialable on the Trans Am in 1974 and 1975 only. |

Great Info Rocky! Thanks for the post! The SD registry only mentions 5 Vinyl / Cordova top Trans Ams. The earliest build date was November 73 and the latest one was June 74. Two were export cars.

I have seen Jay's Trans Am and drove it and I have to say I own several but this car is without a doubt the nicest Trans Am I have seen. The cordova top looks great and the attention to detail is over the top !!
