The word "cheap" will always bite you in the ass in the long run. However, Hughes builds a good convertor, I wouldn't consider them "cheap" but rather well priced. I used Hughes convertors for years until I went with custom builds. I used to know people there from my area too. Also, all convertors have a "stall". For someone like myself, saying "stall" convertor is right up there with calling a distributor a "dizzy".

Let me rephrase, This is not my FIRST rodeo, continental is out of business, I haven’t needed a entry level converter in 20 years, I would like to know, From currently experienced enthusiasts, is there a particular go to entry level converter that is the go to currently?? If not I will just use an original 78 T/A 6.6 converter

Personal experience, go with Hughes and stay away from B&M, TCi, Summit or Jegs branded ones.

John Dinkel ( see my signature below ) owns our local speed shop and for the most part he sells a lot of Hughes converters for 'off the shelf' street stuff and works with Lenny @ Ultimate Converter Concepts for custom race applications.

Their website appears to be down right now, but I think jake's performance does basic non lockup converters for like $275. I would do that before I would buy an off the shelf unit. Iv e just heard too many stories about them being way too loose.

Cliff has found a new converter supplier that satisfies him, and he has sold many. I believe TSC is name? Tri Shield Converters. THe owner is a Buick enthusiast. Wouldn't be an entry level converter, but would be built specifically to your needs.

I run a Redneck Racing (now Freakshow) in my race car That was custom and cost $325 shipped. My car runs 10.01 with 6.8% slip across the stripe. It works very well, isn't $900-$1100 and couples very well.

Personally I'd never deal with a middle-man. I'm guessing north of $600, so not cheap. For the money PTC are legends in converters and recommended on tons of forums including here. The choice of most big name Pontiac racers. Last edited by pastry_chef; 07-21-2020 at 08:35 PM. |

I’ve never heard of the slip in terms of a percentage. Is 6.8 a mile driveable amount?

There are plenty of components I would be happy to negotiate myself, but I don’t know anything about torque converters. I was more than happy to let two professionals between cliff and Tri shield work it out for me.

If you know rear gear ratio, transmission, engine size, compression ratio and cam specs etc. The converter builder does the rest.
A veteran converter builder has seen thousands of combinations. My cheap converter recommendation "Freakshow" above has over 500 positive Ebay feedback, 0 negative. Last edited by pastry_chef; 07-21-2020 at 09:26 PM. |

I run a Jegs brand 3200 stall.
I like it. So far it's been fine after a year and about 4000 miles.

"Personally I'd never deal with a middle-man. I'm guessing north of $600, so not cheap." I do this for a living, test everything I sell and use customer feedback to continue to improve the product. For those reading this that beats the chit out of googling up 100 percent of my information then regurgitating it here in Public Forum. I think to "qualify" a specific converter, or even a company selling them one should have at least have a Pontiac powered car that moves and have actually used the product being recommended........FWIW. I don't get into details on these threads because there are rules here for posting, and when you have a great product there is no need to remind folks how good it is, that sort of thing just sorts itself out in the big scheme of life anyhow. Considering my average wage these days I probably LOOSE about $70 or so to take the time to write up an order for one of these converters.........Even so I don't mind taking the time to offer the service to other dedicated enthusiasts that frequent here who are in search of the best products out there available for these vehicles..........Cliff
